The painting of Santa Bárbara, a work created by Bolivian artist Leonardo Flores in the second half of the 17th century, which was stolen from the church in the municipality of Puerto Acosta, La Paz department, has been returned to Bolivia after 50 years.

It is believed that the stolen work first arrived in Brazil, where it was auctioned and acquired by a Chilean-American collector who was unaware of its origin. The collector took it to New York, where it became part of art exhibitions, reported the Aciprensa portal.

A sacred art expert identified the piece in New York, and the recovery efforts involved collaboration from Interpol, UNESCO, and various cultural institutions, eventually locating the painting in Chile.

Its authenticity was verified through a technical analysis process that included an X-ray study, which confirmed the pigments matched materials used in the 17th century.

The return process was handled by Chilean authorities at the Consulate General of Bolivia in Santiago.

In 2023, during efforts to recover the artwork, cultural manager Lupe Meneses told La Opinión: “It was a magnificent work by Leonardo Flores, depicting the theme of Santa Bárbara, one of the most important painters of the La Paz school.”

Devotion to Santa Bárbara is highly significant in the Andean region, as she is considered a protector against lightning and storms. Therefore, the return of this painting highlights both the importance of cultural heritage and the religious symbols cherished by Bolivians.

This dual cultural and spiritual significance of the painting’s return to Puerto Acosta was emphasized during the ceremony by Bolivia’s Consul General in Chile, José Pinelo, who expressed gratitude for the efforts made.

Among Leonardo Flores’ notable works is also “Parábola del pobre Lázaro,” originating from the parish of San Pedro in La Paz, which now forms part of the Cathedral Museum.
