The TSE will analyze the TCP ruling when elections are officially announced

The Plurinational Constitutional Tribunal (TCP) ruling that disqualifies Evo Morales and other political figures from running for national or local offices will be formally applied during the 2025 electoral process, according to the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE).

TSE member Tahuichi Tahuichi stated that the ruling sets new binding rules in the electoral field, which will be enforced starting in April 2025, during the candidate evaluation period for the general elections.

“The constitutional ruling is binding and mandatory, whether we like it or not. When elections are called on April 19, 2025, these guidelines will be applied. At that point, the TSE will assess whether candidates meet the requirements, including this mandate limit provision,” Tahuichi said in a television interview.

The TCP reaffirmed its decision in Constitutional Order 0083/2024, stating that candidates (including Evo Morales) who have served two terms in national, departmental, or municipal positions cannot run again.

This restriction may also apply to politicians like Jhonny Fernández and Rubén Costas if they run again for the Santa Cruz Mayor’s Office or Governorship, respectively.

2025 Elections

The TSE confirmed that general elections will take place on Sunday, August 17, 2025. Citizens will vote to elect the president, vice president, senators, and deputies for a new five-year term.

If no candidate obtains 50% plus one of the votes, or if the difference between the first and second place does not exceed 10%, a runoff will be held on October 19, 2025.
