A hailstorm causes damage in Oruro; in Potosí, a “tornado” puts residents on alert

On Monday afternoon, a severe hailstorm in the city of Oruro caused the collapse of roofing structures in two educational institutions, injuring two girls who were taken to a hospital. Meanwhile, over the weekend, a tornado in Karachipampa, Potosí, alarmed residents and damaged the roofs of several homes.

The hailstorm in Oruro began at 6:30 p.m., leading to flooding in several streets and significant damage to houses. According to a report by La Patria de Oruro, parents noted the collapse of roofs at Jesús María School in the northern part of the city and José Ignacio Sanjinés School in the southern area, where the two girls were injured.

“We cannot allow our students to be exposed to such risks. It is imperative to review the designs and structures of each educational unit,” stated the district director of Education, Raúl Villca, according to the Oruro news outlet.

In Karachipampa, Potosí, on Sunday, local residents reported strong winds that generated a “tornado,” which traveled nearly a kilometer and affected several houses.

According to Limberth Choque, spokesperson for the Potosí Departmental Police, the phenomenon swept through the Karachipampa area. Videos shared on social media show the tornado moving through the region, stirring up a wall of dust.
