Government of Argentina Revokes Evo’s Refugee Status: “We Don’t Help Those Who Spread Terror” | Gobierno de Argentina cesa la condición de refugiado de Evo: “No ayudamos a quienes siembran terror”

Erbol, El Dia:

The Argentine government announced this Wednesday that it has ended the refugee status previously granted to Evo Morales.

The news was made public by the Argentine presidential spokesperson, Manuel Adorni, through his X account.

Morales resided in Argentina between December 2019 and November 2020, during his exile under Jeanine Añez’s government.

The refugee status had been granted during the administration of Alberto Fernández, who was an ally of Morales.

In a statement, the Argentine Ministry of Justice noted that the refugee status was “improperly used as a political tool by President Alberto Fernández, disregarding the requirements established by Law N° 26.165.”

They denounced that Morales was “received in Argentina with unjustified privileges, despite the serious accusations against him, including corruption, electoral fraud, and political persecution of opponents.”

Now that Morales can move freely in Bolivia, the Argentine government considers that “he no longer faces the dangers that would justify humanitarian protection under refugee status.”

“Refugee status is a right that must be granted seriously, not as a tool of political convenience. This government will in no way use the resources of the Argentine people to protect criminals, terrorists, or would-be dictators. We don’t help those who spread terror and attack democracy,” the statement added.

During his stay in Argentina, Morales served as the campaign manager for MAS in the 2020 elections, where it was decided in Buenos Aires that Luis Arce would be the presidential candidate.
