Women Builders, an app for safe and efficient projects | Mujeres Constructoras, una app para obras seguras y eficientes

A system that helps meet demand safely

Thanks to the app that bears its name, female workers can be contacted by clients in a secure manner, ensuring a fair agreement between both parties.

Finding a female mason is now easier. You only need to download the Mujeres Constructoras app from the Play Store, where you’ll find contact information for 160 workers, ranging from plumbers to painters and carpenters.

This program is the next step of an initiative by Red Hábitat, which has been working with this group of women for 10 years to help them improve their skills and enhance their working conditions and employment terms.

The goal of the system is to improve employability, close the digital gap, and economically empower women through equal access to employment, better conditions, and reducing the risk of gender-based violence.

An abused sector
“Ten years ago, we reached out to women working in construction. We realized that not only were there more women than we thought, but they also faced a lot of abuse,” recalls Pastora Zuñagua, from the Women Builders Support Program of Red Hábitat.

The women were relegated to the role of “construction assistant.” “This is one of the hardest and least paid jobs, which can lead to health issues over time,” she adds.

On top of that, they were responsible for training new workers but were not allowed to move up in position, while their trainees did.

As a result, the NGO decided to start a training program for these women. They were trained in fine work and project completion, which broadened their job opportunities.

“One reason for this is that construction is a field with many opportunities for people with low educational levels. Education is not required, and hiring is based on experience,” Zuñagua points out.

Over a decade, more than 700 women were trained. In addition, Women’s Construction Associations were created in Cochabamba, La Paz, and Santa Cruz, providing a protective umbrella. These groups formed the foundation for the development of the app.

Immediate Need
The decision to create the app came during the pandemic. “We realized that the workers needed a virtual tool to be able to connect with employers, whether individuals or companies.”

To achieve this, partnerships were made with companies such as Soboce, Construred, Coral, Faboce, Sika, Cóndor, Tecnopor, Tigre, Synergy, Conbelt, and Tecnopreco. Support was also provided by the Swedish Embassy and Solidar.

Once downloaded, the app requests essential information from the user, such as their name, ID number, place of residence, and phone contact.

Thus, from the perspective of the employer, the system allows them to select the service they need in specialties such as electricity, painting, plumbing, masonry, plastering, tile installation, aluminum carpentry, false ceilings, floating floors, and Drywall installation. Meanwhile, the women builders can view the current demands waiting to be fulfilled. There are no fixed prices, due to the country’s economic situation, but there are reference prices, which help facilitate an agreement.

According to studies by the network, women builders are known for their attention to detail, helping clients save money by requesting exactly what is needed, and they don’t miss work on Mondays due to weekend parties.
