Hundreds of winters leave their mark on the fountain of the Mint

Due to the intense cold, the stone of the emblematic fountain has cracks and now work is being done on its restoration.

No one is unaware that in the city of Potosí the winter cold is extremely intense. Proof of this is that low temperatures can cause damage even to materials such as stone. This is the case of the Fountain of the National Mint, which is being intervened due to damage to its structure.

The director of the National Mint, Luis Arancibia, reported that it has been determined to carry out an intervention in the fountain.

“The drop in temperatures, considering that it is a water equipment that works in our fountain, which dates back to the late 19th century, has naturally deteriorated the stone, not only due to the passage of time,” he said.

Since the fountain was placed in the National Mint, it has suffered harsh winters and frosts.

“When water freezes, what it does is open the stone, what has generated is the release of material,” he added.

Based on a previous analysis, it has been decided to intervene on the fountain, which will be out of operation for a few weeks, in order to repair the damage.

It is estimated that the preservation work will last between four to five weeks.

“A lot of material has to be replaced due to this separation of the stone that has been generated as a result of the water freezing. There were already some water leaks,” he stated.
