The fire enters the Noel Kempff Mercado Park
- The fire is located on a plateau that is difficult to access. Brigades mobilized to design fire fighting strategies
The forest fires do not let up and now they have begun to affect the forest reserves. Yesterday a fire was reported in the Noel Kempff Mercado National Park, one of the most important protected areas in the country.
Fire emergencies have multiplied in recent weeks and community brigades have had to react to deal with the fire.
Yovenka Rosado, director of Natural Resources of the Government, reported that the fire in the Noel Kempff Mercado is located on a plateau that is difficult to access, so the park rangers have been asked to travel to the place to design the best fire attack strategy.
On his side, Donald Áñez, park ranger responsible for the southern zone of this protected area, confirmed that the reported fire is on the Caparú plateau, in that sector of the park.
Alberto Terrazas, director of the Noel Kempff Mercado Park, lamented that every year the park is affected by fires, which sometimes occur in places that are difficult to access and end up extinguishing by themselves. “It is a very special area, it has its own conditions and it is very complicated to reach,” said Terrazas.
He added that they are having two crews (each made up of six park rangers) to enter the park and verify the fire.
Risks
According to yesterday’s report, Santa Cruz has 50% of the department at extreme risk of forest fires, with an affected area of 70,545 hectares so far this year and 2,776 sources of burning reported this month alone.
According to the Forest Fire Early Warning System (Satif) there are several active forest fires in municipalities such as Concepción, Carmen Rivero Tórrez, Porongo, Santa Rosa de Sara, Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Warnes, Gutiérrez and San Ignacio de Velasco. Precisely the most serious is the one inside the Noel Kempff Mercado park.
Meanwhile, only on Sunday there were nine incidents to which the communal brigades have reacted immediately.
“The other emergencies are being attended to with specialized logistics, we have fire brigades from the Government. There are cisterns, tank trucks and rapid intervention teams, retardants,” said Rosado.
Among the events reported, three were of magnitude (in San Carlos, Pailón and Ascensión de Guarayos) and required the rapid and timely reaction not only of firefighters, but also of the residents.
In Ascensión de Guarayos, for example, the ringing of bells was used to get people out of their homes and help fight the fire, which had started in a sawmill and prevented it from spreading. People were afraid that the flames stoked by the strong gusts of wind would reach nearby homes. Finally, a tanker truck sent by the sub governorate, in addition to machinery, made it possible to control the fire.
In the municipality of San Carlos, the smoke that came out of a wooded area scared the residents, who left their houses and with the help of buckets and hoses, they fought the flames.

Los incendios forestales no dan tregua y ahora han empezado a afectar las reservas forestales. Ayer se reportó un incendio en el Parque Nacional Noel Kempff Mercado, una de las áreas protegidas más importantes del país.
Las emergencias por el fuego se han multiplicado en las últimas semanas y las brigadas comunales han tenido que reaccionar para hacer frente al fuego.
Yovenka Rosado, directora de Recursos Naturales de la Gobernación, informó que el incendio en el Noel Kempff Mercado se localiza en una meseta que es de difícil acceso, por lo que se ha pedido a los guardaparques que se desplacen hasta el lugar para diseñar la mejor estrategia de ataque al fuego.
De su lado, Donald Áñez, guardaparque responsable de la zona sur de esta área protegida, confirmó que el incendio reportado está en la meseta Caparú, en ese sector del parque.
Alberto Terrazas, director del Parque Noel Kempff Mercado, lamentó que cada año el parque se vea afectado por los incendios, que en ocasiones se producen en lugares de difícil acceso y acaban extinguiéndose por sí solos. “Es una zona muy especial, tiene condiciones propias y muy complicada para alcanzar”, resaltó Terrazas.
Agregó que están disponiendo de dos cuadrillas (cada una compuesta por seis guardaparques) para ingresar al parque y verificar el incendio.
Riesgos
Según el reporte de ayer, Santa Cruz tiene al 50% del departamento con riesgo extremo de incendios forestales, con una superficie afectada de 70.545 hectáreas en lo que va del año y 2.776 focos de quema reportados solo en este mes.
Según el Sistema de Alerta Temprana de Incendios Forestales (Satif) hay varios incendios forestales activos en municipios como Concepción, el Carmen Rivero Tórrez, Porongo, Santa Rosa de Sara, Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Warnes, Gutiérrez y San Ignacio de Velasco. Precisamente el más grave es el que está dentro del parque Noel Kempff Mercado.
Entre tanto, solo el domingo se registraron nueve siniestros a los que han reaccionado de manera inmediata las brigadas comunales.
“Las otras emergencias están siendo atendidas con la logística especializada, tenemos brigadas de bomberos de la Gobernación. Hay cisternas, carretas-tanque y equipos de intervención rápida, retardantes”, aseguró Rosado.
Entre los hechos reportados, tres fueron de magnitud (en San Carlos, Pailón y Ascensión de Guarayos) y necesitaron la reacción rápida y oportuna no solo de bomberos, sino de los pobladores.
En Ascensión de Guarayos, por ejemplo, se recurrió al repique de campanas para que la gente salga de sus hogares y ayuden a combatir el fuego, que había comenzado en un aserradero evitando que se propague. La gente tenía miedo de que las llamas atizadas por las fuertes ráfagas de viento lleguen a las viviendas cercanas. Finalmente, un camión cisterna enviado por la subgobernación, además de maquinaria, permitió controlar el incendio.
En el municipio de San Carlos, la humareda que salía de una zona boscosa causó susto a los pobladores, quienes salieron de sus casas y con ayuda de baldes y mangueras, combatieron las llamas.
