Moscoso, the king of the world who worked eight years for the title
“He had the possibility of going to other countries that offered him advantages, but despite begging for trips, he always chose Bolivia,” said the athlete’s father.
“I’m tired of being second. Today could be the big day”, predicted Conrrado Moscoso, yesterday before playing the singles final at the XXI World Racquetball Championship. That’s how it went. Hours later, the Bolivian conquered the crown for which he fought for eight years.
Moscoso defeated the experienced Rocky Carson, from the United States, a five-time world champion whom he defeated 8-11, 11-7, 11-4 and 11-8. “He worked for this title since 2014. At that time, he was 18 years old and he just lost to Carson. Now he must be over 42 years old, ”Luis Moscoso, father of the national racquetball player who contacted his family at 0:00, told Página Siete, after an intense day.
Before stepping into the final in singles, after passing the group phase without trouble, Moscoso beat Michimune Kono (Japan) in the playoffs by 11-4, 11-4 and 11-9; Alejandro Landa (United States) by 11-3, 11-2 and 11-3; and in the semifinal he beat Rodrigo Montoya (Mexico) 11-4, 11-2 and 11-6.
“Conrrado is still the best athlete in Bolivia, he has not been surpassed so far. Now his next challenge is to be champion in the Pan American Games, which is the medal he is missing. With that we already have everything”, said the father of the racquetball player. After winning the world champion trophy, Moscoso played the doubles final with Roland Keller. The national duo faced the Mexicans Álvaro Beltrán and Daniel de la Rosa. The duo started off on the right foot, winning the first courts 11-7 and 14-12, but the locals came back 3-2 with partials 11-7, 11-5 and 11-6.
In mixed doubles, Moscoso and Jenny Daza were in the semifinal, after losing against Canadians Frederique Lambert and Samuel Murray 9-11, 9-11, 10-12. In pairs in ladies, Daza and Angélica Barrios were eliminated in the quarterfinals against the Mexicans Samanta Salas and Paola Longoria by 5-11, 4-11 and 4-11. In women’s singles, both Barrios and Daza finished in the round of 16.
How much money did he earn?
“Unfortunately, with this title he did not earn money. The title is at stake, but not money. In a few weeks he will go to the United States to compete in a contest that will give him approximately $7,000 in prize money,” explained Luis Moscoso, who asked the government “to be aware of Conrrado’s achievement and sacrifice. “Él tenía la posibilidad de irse a otros países que le ofrecieron ventajas, pero a pesar de estar mendigando viajes, él eligió siempre a Bolivia”, dijo el padre del deportista.
“Estoy cansado de ser el segundo. Hoy puede ser el gran día”, auguró Conrrado Moscoso, ayer antes de jugar la final de singles en el XXI Campeonato Mundial de Ráquetbol. Así fue. Horas después, el boliviano conquistó la corona por la que luchó durante ocho años.
Moscoso derrotó al experimentado Rocky Carson, de Estados Unidos, un pentacampeón mundial al que venció por 8-11, 11-7, 11-4 y 11-8. “Él trabajó por este título desde 2014. En ese tiempo, tenía 18 años y justamente perdió ante Carson. Ahora él debe tener más de 42 años”, contó a Página Siete Luis Moscoso, padre del raquetbolista nacional que se comunicó con su familia a las 0:00, después de una jornada intensa.
Antes de pisar la final en singles, después de pasar sin apuros la fase de grupos, Moscoso superó en los play offs a Michimune Kono (Japón) por 11-4, 11-4 y 11-9; Alejandro Landa (Estados Unidos) por 11-3, 11-2 y 11-3; y en la semifinal se impuso a Rodrigo Montoya (México) por 11-4, 11-2 y 11-6.
“Conrrado sigue siendo el mejor deportista de Bolivia, no fue superado hasta el momento. Ahora su próximo reto es salir campeón en los Juegos Panamericanos, que es la medalla que le falta. Con eso ya tenemos todo”, contó el padre del raquetbolista. Luego de ganar el trofeo de campeón mundial, Moscoso disputó la final en dobles con Roland Keller. La dupla nacional se midió ante los mexicanos Álvaro Beltrán y Daniel de la Rosa. El dúo comenzó con el pie derecho, ganando las primeras canchas por 11-7 y 14-12, pero los locales remontaron 3-2 con parciales 11-7, 11-5 y 11-6.
En dobles mixtos, Moscoso y Jenny Daza quedaron en la semifinal, tras perder contra los canadienses Frederique Lambert y Samuel Murray por 9-11, 9-11, 10-12. Por parejas en damas, Daza y Angélica Barrios fueron eliminadas en cuartos de final ante las mexicanas Samanta Salas y Paola Longoria por 5-11, 4-11 y 4-11. En singles femenino, tanto Barrios como Daza quedaron en la fase de octavos.
¿Cuánto dinero ganó?
“Lamentablemente, con este título él no ganó dinero. Se juega el título, pero no dinero. Dentro de unas semanas irá a Estados Unidos a competir en un certamen que le dará aproximadamente 7.000 dólares de premio”, explicó Luis Moscoso, quien pidió al Gobierno “tomar conciencia del logro y sacrificio de Conrrado. Él tenía la posibilidad de irse a otros países que le ofrecieron ventajas, pero a pesar de estar mendigando viajes, él eligió siempre a Bolivia”.
