They restore the historic bell tower of the Cathedral of Oruro

It was supported by the United States Cultural Preservation Fund. Among other historical events, it witnessed the arrival of Simón Bolívar

In 2021, the Cultural Preservation Fund of the United States chose to support the restoration project of the 19th century bell tower of the Oruro Cathedral, among 31 other historical heritage preservation projects around the world. The project, which has already concluded, contributes to recover for Oruro a historical and cultural site of great architectural and patrimonial importance.

The restoration had financial support of nearly $72,000, money with which the clock, bell and bell tower of the 19th-century Oruro Cathedral, the iconic centerpiece of the city’s historic skyline, were restored. The floors of the bell tower, the bell and the chime mechanism had deteriorated and was in need of complete restoration, as was the clock which had not worked for the last 20 years.

The restoration of this tower, located right next to the main square in the center of the city of Oruro, will help promote tourism through visits, by Oruro residents themselves, as well as by visitors from other cities and foreigners.

The Cultural Preservation Fund was created by the United States Congress in 2001 to show respect for the cultural heritage of other cultures and countries. The Ambassadors, Charges d’Affaires or Consuls of 132 countries sent cultural preservation projects prepared in conjunction with qualified institutions, of which the Fund chose 32 for 2021.

By supporting the preservation of sites and traditions, this Fund helps revitalize and define cultural elements of communities and nations for future generations to enjoy.

A little history

In 1638 the great bell was installed in the Tower of the Cathedral. This particular bell could be heard as far as Paria and Sora Sora, more than twenty kilometers away. The bell was rung in the invasion of Cochabamba troops commanded by Esteban Arze on November 16, 1811 alerting the Villa de Oruro and preparing for its defense.

It was also rung at the entrance of the Liberator Simón Bolívar on September 18, 1825. This historic bell also announced the entrance of the Railroad to Oruro on May 15, 1892.

Restauran el histórico campanario de la Catedral de Oruro

Contó con el aporte del Fondo de Preservación Cultural de Estados Unidos. Entre otros hechos históricos, fue testigo de la llegada de Simón Bolívar

El año  2021, el Fondo de Preservación Cultural de Estados Unidos eligió apoyar el proyecto de restauración del campanario del siglo XIX de la catedral de Oruro, entre otros 31 proyectos de preservación histórica patrimonial en todo el mundo.  El proyecto, que ya ha concluido, contribuye a recuperar para Oruro un sitio histórico y cultural de gran importancia arquitectónica y patrimonial.

La restauración tuvo un apoyo financiero de casi $us 72.000, dinero con el que se restauró el reloj, la campana y el campanario de la Catedral de Oruro del siglo XIX, la pieza central icónica del horizonte histórico de la ciudad. Los pisos del campanario, la campana y el mecanismo de repique de la campana se habían deteriorado y necesitaba una restauración completa, al igual que el reloj que no había funcionado durante los últimos 20 años.  

La restauración de esta torre, ubicada justo al lado de la plaza principal en el centro de la ciudad de Oruro, ayudará a fomentar el turismo a través de visitas, de los mismos orureños, como de visitantes de otras ciudades y extranjeros.

El Fondo de Preservación Cultural se creó por el Congreso de Estados Unidos el año 2001 para mostrar respeto por el patrimonio cultural de otras culturas y países. Los Embajadores, Encargados de Negocio o Cónsules de 132 países enviaron proyectos de preservación cultural elaborados en conjunto con instituciones calificadas, de los cuales el Fondo escogió 32 para el 2021.  

Al apoyar la preservación de sitios, y tradiciones este Fondo ayuda a revitalizar y definir elementos culturales de comunidades y naciones  para que éstos sean disfrutados por generaciones futuras.

Un poco de historia

En 1638 se instaló la gran campana en la Torre de la Catedral. Esta campana en particular se podía escuchar hasta Paria y Sora Sora, a más de veinte kilómetros de distancia. La campana se tocó en la invasión de las tropas de Cochabamba comandadas por Esteban Arze el 16 de noviembre de 1811 alertando a la Villa de Oruro y preparándose para su defensa.

También se tocó en la entrada del Libertador Simón Bolívar el 18 de septiembre de 1825. Esta campana histórica también anunció la entrada del Ferrocarril a Oruro el 15 de mayo de 1892.
