Dellien claims Savannah Challenger title

For the second time in three weeks, Hugo Dellien claimed a win in an ATP Challenger event.

The 24 year old Bolivian earned the Savannah Challenger title with a three set win over Christian Harrison Sunday, 6-1, 1-6, 6-4.

“I think it’s incredible what I did. I don’t believe it yet,” Dellien said through a translator. “But I’m very, very happy, and I worked hard for this.”

Dellien earned his first career victory two weeks ago at the Challenger event in Sarasota.

It seemed like Sunday’s final might not last long.

Dellien claimed the first set in under 30 minutes, while Harrison did the same in the second. The final set was much more of a grind.

The two traded serves in the final set before Dellien finally broke Harrison in the final game for the win.

“I was very tired. I’ve played a lot of matches, and it was very physically demanding,” Dellien said. “I knew it was just about heart. I know there was a lot of people coming to see me, so I had to play with a lot of heart and win for them.”

The win meant much more than just a trophy for Dellien. His win two weeks ago was the first Challenger victory for a Bolivian since 1983. Now the 24 year old has given his home nation two championships.

“It’s very special. It’s been a long time without having good players in Bolivia,” he says. “I think I’m raising a lot of expectations and emotions in my country. It’s a little bit of pressure, but I’m enjoying it.”

Dellien will play in French Open qualifiers soon. With this win, he’ll be seeded for those qualifiers.
