The residence of the Bolivian Ombudsman, promoter of human rights in Bolivia, was the subject in the last two months of two consecutive fires without injury, that the police still not clarified. The Ombudsman Rolando Villena, a bishop of the Methodist church, called the events “as a criminal political fact.”

Villena, who is about to complete his mandate, was in recent years a severe critic of the government, which has earned him official censorship, which came to regard his appointment in 2010 as an error for considering him as an advocate for the interests of the national rightist.

“United Nations reaffirms the importance of the Ombudsman as the responsible national institution to promote effective and compliance with human rights in Bolivia,” adds the document. The Ombudsman’s mandate ends next May 10 and the Congress government majority, faces the succession process, which opponents consider aimed at finding a related person to the government, not an independent authority.
