Restoration work on the roof of the Church of Santiago de Curahuara de Carangas, in the department of Oruro, is moving forward with support from the U.S. Embassy’s Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP), which has allocated $66,240 to the project.

The church, considered an important part of Bolivia’s historical and cultural heritage, dates back to the 16th century and is known as the “Sistine Chapel of the Altiplano” because of the richness of its paintings and artistic features.

The work aims to help preserve the church’s infrastructure and protect this heritage site for future generations.

The U.S. Embassy highlighted that the project is part of efforts carried out by the United States and Bolivia for more than 26 years to preserve the country’s cultural heritage.

According to the diplomatic mission, these initiatives also contribute to promoting tourism and economic development in the communities where they are implemented, such as Curahuara de Carangas in Oruro.

In April of this year, authorities reported that, in addition to restoring the church’s roof, experts are studying the monument’s historical and architectural significance in order to understand its context, construction techniques, and function over time.

According to an official bulletin, the project is part of the Freedom250 celebrations, marking the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence. Throughout 2026, these celebrations honor American history and strengthen regional partnerships through initiatives such as this one.

The Church of Curahuara de Carangas is a monument of great historical, architectural, and cultural importance to Bolivia. It was declared a National Monument in 1960 and is one of the most representative examples of Bolivian colonial architecture. Its construction dates to the 18th century, and its value lies not only in its structure but also in the artistic elements it houses, including its mural paintings and gold-leaf altarpiece.
