Attorney General Roger Mariaca and Santa Cruz Departmental Prosecutor Alberto Zeballos were detained Wednesday night at Viru Viru International Airport, according to preliminary reports.
As of the publication of this article, the reason for the operation had not been officially disclosed, nor was it known whether judicial warrants existed or to which agency the two officials had been transferred.
Both prosecutors are among the Bolivian authorities whose visas were revoked by the United States last Monday. Washington included Zeballos among the affected officials but did not publicly disclose any individual accusation against him.
In Mariaca’s case, the U.S. Department of State accused him of “significant corruption” and alleged that he requested and accepted bribes to facilitate drug trafficking and help violent criminals evade justice. Mariaca rejected the allegations and stated that no prosecutorial investigation should be affected by external decisions.
For his part, Zeballos asked the Bolivian government to seek official information from the United States to determine “precisely what the basis, reason, scope, and legal grounds” for the visa revocation were. He also stated that the Public Prosecutor’s Office would continue its investigations and would not allow external interference.
