Oviedo Denounces Lack of Chilean Cooperation in Narco-Timber Case
The Government Minister told Bolivia’s Plurinational Legislative Assembly that no controlled substances were detected during customs inspections in either Bolivia or Chile, and questioned initial reports by Chilean authorities regarding the investigated shipment.

As part of the so-called Timber Case, Government Minister Marco Antonio Oviedo on Wednesday accused Chilean prosecutors of refusing to provide samples from a shipment seized in that country, which had initially been linked to the alleged presence of drugs embedded in timber exported from Bolivia.
Speaking before the Plurinational Legislative Assembly (ALP), Oviedo stated that the lack of access to the samples prevents independent verification by specialized laboratories.
“The Chilean Prosecutor’s Office has refused to provide us with timber samples so that we can submit them for verification and analysis in laboratories,” Oviedo said, criticizing the way authorities in the neighboring country have handled the case.
The minister also challenged the initial conclusions reached in Chile regarding the shipment, arguing that they were exaggerated or inaccurate.
“The Chilean prosecutor irresponsibly claimed that 108 tons of drugs left Bolivia. It simply does not make sense. European and North American experts have said that is not possible,” he stated.
Along the same lines, Oviedo added that inspections carried out in both countries had detected no irregularities in the transport of the timber products.
“It should be clarified that when the shipment passed through the scanners at Bolivia’s customs facility in Tambo Quemado and Chile’s customs facility in Chungará, no irregularities or presence of controlled substances were detected,” he explained.
The minister appeared before the legislature as part of an interpellation regarding the Government Ministry’s actions in combating drug trafficking. During his presentation, he also provided figures on operations carried out by the Special Anti-Narcotics Force (FELCN), which, according to him, conducted 7,546 interventions nationwide.

En el marco del denominado caso Maderas, el ministro de Gobierno, Marco Antonio Oviedo, denunció este miércoles que la Fiscalía chilena se habría negado a proporcionar muestras del cargamento incautado en ese país, el cual fue vinculado inicialmente a la supuesta presencia de droga impregnada en madera exportada desde Bolivia.
Durante su intervención ante la Asamblea Legislativa Plurinacional (ALP), la autoridad sostuvo que la falta de acceso a dichas muestras impide realizar verificaciones independientes en laboratorios especializados.
“La Fiscalía chilena se ha negado a entregarnos muestras de las maderas para que las sometamos a verificación y análisis en laboratorios”, afirmó Oviedo, al cuestionar el manejo del caso por parte de las autoridades del vecino país.
El ministro también criticó las primeras conclusiones emitidas en Chile respecto al cargamento, señalando que las mismas habrían sido exageradas o imprecisas.
“El fiscal chileno, de manera irresponsable, dijo que de Bolivia salieron 108 toneladas de droga. No entra en la cabeza. Los expertos europeos y norteamericanos dijeron que eso no es posible”, manifestó.
En esa línea, Oviedo añadió que los controles realizados en ambos países no habrían detectado irregularidades en el traslado del producto forestal.
“Cabe aclarar que el cargamento, al pasar por los escáneres el recinto aduanero de Bolivia, en Tambo Quemado, y el recinto aduanero de Chile, en Chungará, no detectó ninguna irregularidad ni presencia de sustancias controladas”, explicó.
La autoridad se presentó ante el pleno legislativo en el marco de su interpelación por las acciones del Ministerio de Gobierno en la lucha contra el narcotráfico, donde también expuso datos sobre operativos de la Fuerza Especial de Lucha Contra el Narcotráfico (FELCN), que —según informó— habría ejecutado 7.546 intervenciones en todo el país.
