Skyrace Illimani to Be Held This Saturday with More Than 130 Athletes
The event will feature national and international competitors and will take place on the slopes of La Paz’s iconic Illimani mountain.
The 2026 National Skyrunning Championship will continue this Saturday with its third stage: Skyrace Illimani, which will be held in La Paz with the participation of more than 130 runners from Bolivia and abroad.
The competition, organized by Skyrunning Bolivia and endorsed by the Bolivian Ski and Mountaineering Federation, is part of the qualification process for the national team that will compete in the 2027 South American Championship.
“We will have more than 130 runners from both Bolivia and other countries. International athletes are coming from the United States, France, Spain, and Peru. Within Bolivia, participants will represent Santa Cruz, Cochabamba, Cobija, Oruro, Tarija, Potosí, and La Paz. They have accepted the challenge of racing in below-freezing temperatures, starting at five in the morning on this emblematic mountain,” said Paolo Choque, director of Skyrunning Bolivia.
The main attraction of the event is that it will take place on Illimani, the country’s most famous snow-capped mountain. The low temperatures will require participants to be well equipped to avoid difficulties during the race.
There will be three race distances: 29, 22, and 10 kilometers, for both women and men.
“The race will start from the community of Pinaya, located at 3,990 meters above sea level. This is the starting point for mountaineers ascending the mountain and now also for trail runners. Competitors will then reach the slopes of the glacier area known as Puente Roto, the base camp for climbers attempting the summit of Illimani, reaching a maximum altitude of 4,500 meters,” Choque explained.
He added that “the race has the support of the Municipality of Palca and its mayor, David Luna Mamani, who promotes the race route as a tourist attraction for visitors.”

El Campeonato Nacional de Skyrunning 2026 continuará este sábado con el desarrollo de la tercera etapa: el Skyrace Illimani, que se llevará adelante en La Paz con la presencia de más de 130 participantes bolivianos y del exterior.
Esta competencia, que es organizada por Skyrunning Bolivia y avalada por la Federación Boliviana de Ski y Andinismo, es válida para conformar la selección que participará en el Sudamericano de 2027.
“Vamos a contar con más de 130 corredores, tanto del interior como exterior. Los atletas de fuera del país son provenientes de Estados Unidos, Francia, España y Perú; mientras que de Bolivia estarán representadas las ciudades de Santa Cruz, Cochabamba, Cobija, Oruro, Tarija, Potosí y La Paz, quienes aceptaron este desafío que se correrá con temperaturas bajo cero y partirá a las cinco de la mañana en la emblemática montaña”, manifestó Paolo Choque, director de Skyrunning Bolivia.
El mayor atractivo de esta prueba es que se correrá por el Illimani, el nevado más conocido del país y que al mismo tiempo tiene bajas temperaturas, por lo que los participantes deberán estar bien abrigados para evitar sufrir percances.
Habrá tres distancias habilitadas: 29, 22 y 10 kilómetros, tanto en damas como en varones.
“La prueba partirá desde la comunidad de Pinaya, que se sitúa a 3.990 metros sobre el nivel del mar, punto de partida de los andinistas que hacen el ascenso a la montaña y ahora de los corredores de montaña. Luego llegarán a las faldas del nevado conocido como Puente Roto, lugar de campamento base para los escaladores que realizan cumbre al Illimani y llegando a una altura máxima de 4.500 metros”, explicó Choque.
Agregó que “esta carrera cuenta con el apoyo del Gobierno Municipal de Palca con su alcalde, el señor David Luna Mamani, quien promociona esta ruta de la carrera como atractivo turístico para muchas personas”.
