A specimen of ocelot, which is presumed to have injuries, was rescued in the urban area of the municipality of Puerto Suárez, in Santa Cruz, after neighbors raised the alarm, the National Service of Protected Areas (Sernap) reported on Tuesday.
The rescue was carried out by the protection team of the Otuquis National Park and Integrated Management Natural Area (PN-ANMI), in coordination with the Autonomous Municipal Government of Puerto Suárez.
According to the report, during the preliminary evaluation it is presumed that the feline has injuries, so authorities are awaiting the arrival of the Wildlife Unit of the Santa Cruz Governor’s Office to conduct the corresponding diagnosis and determine the actions needed for its recovery.
In addition, the Municipal Government of Puerto Suárez is seeking support so that the specimen can receive specialized care.
Sernap personnel explained that the presence of wild animals in urban areas may be related to the search for food, the loss or alteration of their habitat, pressure on ecosystems, or situations of stress.
The Otuquis National Park and Integrated Management Natural Area is one of the country’s main biodiversity refuges and is home to important populations of wildlife, including the ocelot.
The agency highlighted the importance of the public promptly reporting the presence of wild animals to facilitate the intervention of the competent authorities and contribute to the protection and conservation of species.

El ocelote que fue encontrado en la zona urbana de ese municipio, tras el llamado de los lugareños.
Un ejemplar de ocelote, que presuntamente presenta lesiones, fue rescatado en la zona urbana del municipio de Puerto Suárez, en Santa Cruz, tras la alerta de vecinos, informó este martes el Servicio Nacional de Áreas Protegidas (Sernap).
El rescate fue realizado por el cuerpo de protección del Parque Nacional y Área Natural de Manejo Integrado (PN-ANMI) Otuquis, en coordinación con el Gobierno Autónomo Municipal de Puerto Suárez.
De acuerdo con el reporte, durante la evaluación preliminar se presume que el felino presenta lesiones, por lo que se aguarda la llegada de la Unidad de Fauna de la Gobernación de Santa Cruz para realizar el diagnóstico correspondiente y definir las acciones para su recuperación.
Además, el Gobierno Municipal de Puerto Suárez gestiona apoyo para que el ejemplar reciba atención especializada.
Personal del Sernap explicó que la presencia de animales silvestres en zonas urbanas puede estar relacionada con la búsqueda de alimento, la pérdida o alteración de su hábitat, la presión sobre los ecosistemas o situaciones de estrés.
El Parque Nacional y Área Natural de Manejo Integrado Otuquis es uno de los principales refugios de biodiversidad del país y alberga importantes poblaciones de fauna silvestre, entre ellas el ocelote.
Destacó la importancia de que la población reporte oportunamente la presencia de fauna silvestre para facilitar la intervención de las autoridades competentes y contribuir a la protección y conservación de las especies.
