After 40 Years, Bolivia Returns to the Equestrian World Championship and Wins the Title

The riders of the national team triumphed in Ecuador in both the team and individual competitions.

Forty years had to pass before a Bolivian national team once again competed in a Military Equestrian World Championship. This year’s event was held in Ecuador, where Team Bolivia was crowned champion in both the team and individual standings.

“Bolivia had not attended a world championship for 40 years. The last time was in 1986, at the Madrid World Championship,” said competition runner-up Lieutenant Álvaro Guarachi.

Bolivia claimed the gold medals at the 26th Military Equestrian World Championship 2026, held in Quito. The national squad won the overall team classification and secured the top two positions in the individual competition.

“This competition was of an extremely high level for the entire Army. There was a selection process beforehand, and only the best are here. In Ecuador, we were competing against delegations of a very high standard,” said individual champion Lieutenant Jorge Antequera.

The tournament brought together military delegations from 18 countries and is considered one of the most important and demanding events in international military sports.

“The assignment of horses was another major challenge. You do not ride the same horses every day, so it is a chance to demonstrate your abilities, strengths, and your capacity to connect emotionally with the horse,” Antequera added.

The Bolivian riders belong to the Army Military Riding School, which received the invitation to participate in this year’s event.

“At the beginning of the year, we started jumping clinics and much more intensive preparation with several instructors. That is how we were able to bring this achievement to Bolivia. A selection process was held, and from there the representatives were chosen and given even stronger training,” explained Captain Jharel Bascopé.

In the overall individual classification, first place was won by Bolivian Lieutenant Antequera, while second place also went to a Bolivian rider, Lieutenant Guarachi. Third place was awarded to Romania’s Patricia María Stoian. The athletes received their medals from Ecuadorian military authorities and representatives of the International Military Sports Council.

Bolivia also prevailed in the overall team classification, winning first place and securing one of the country’s most outstanding performances in military equestrian competitions on the world stage.
