“Martín,” the rooster still waiting outside a hospital in Santa Cruz for his deceased owner

For years, “Martín” has lived around an oncology hospital in Santa Cruz de la Sierra. His owner was admitted to the medical center with cancer and never came back out. Since then, the little rooster has remained outside waiting.

Sometimes the most moving stories appear in the most unexpected places. Amid the daily movement at the Oncology Hospital in Santa Cruz, there is a small creature who has become a symbol of loyalty, companionship, and memory. His name is “Martín,” and he is a rooster who, according to workers and patients, never left the place after losing his owner.

The story began before the pandemic, when a man suffering from cancer arrived at the hospital accompanied by his inseparable little rooster.

The owner entered the medical center to receive treatment… but he never came back out.

And Martín stayed outside. As if he were still waiting to see him return.

“A man with cancer arrived and went inside. The owner never came out again, and the little rooster stayed here outside, like when someone waits for a family member,” recounted a hospital worker, visibly moved.

Over the years, Martín learned to survive around the hospital grounds. When it rains, he finds shelter on his own. He wanders through the outside corridors, walks among the people, and especially approaches whenever someone offers him pipoca, his favorite food.

“Everyone loves him,” say those who work there.

The most surprising thing is that nobody has been able to take him away.

“He won’t let himself be caught,” they say.

Because of that, many have already started comparing him to Hachikō, the famous Japanese dog who waited for years for his deceased owner at a train station and whose story became known around the world.

Today, Martín has become much more than just a rooster for those who frequent the hospital. For some patients, he represents companionship. For others, hope. And for many, he is a silent reminder that love and loyalty know no species.

While life continues moving forward around him, Martín remains there, waiting.
