The United States Embassy in Bolivia suspended routine consular services in La Paz for Wednesday, May 27, and Thursday, May 28, due to road blockades and demonstrations taking place in different regions of the country.

Through a “security alert” issued on Tuesday, the diplomatic mission stated that it will only handle emergencies through the phone line 2 216 8000.

The embassy warned that ongoing blockades and protests are taking place in Bolivia, disrupting transportation and other essential services.

“Avoid areas of demonstrations and do not travel by road between cities in Bolivia. The US government has limited ability to provide emergency services to US citizens in these blockades due to security risks,” the Embassy states on its website.

According to the diplomatic mission’s report, blockades can be set up with little prior notice, and drivers who attempted to cross them reported incidents of violence, physical assaults, and damage to vehicles.

“Air transportation is operating normally. However, access to El Alto Airport, La Paz, is intermittent due to occasional blockades at the airport entrance,” the statement says.

The diplomatic mission recommended that its citizens:

  • Avoid protest areas and exercise caution if near gatherings or demonstrations.
  • Do not travel by road between cities. Monitor local media for updates and remain aware of your surroundings.
  • Keep a low profile and allow extra time for travel.
  • Keep travel documents updated and readily available.
  • Have enough food, water, and fuel supplies for several days.
