Union Leader Says Era of “Social Organizations” Is Over and Warns They May Move to Clear Roadblocks

“It is now the time of productive organizations,” said César Gonzáles, who argued that the era of the so-called social organizations ended after the MAS party’s 20 years in power. There is growing anger among Bolivia’s market vendors over the economic losses caused by the blockades, especially in the cities of La Paz and El Alto.

The national executive of the Confederation of Bolivia’s Market Vendors, César Gonzáles, stated that the era of social organizations ended with the 20 years of government under the Movement Toward Socialism (MAS), and that now is the time for productive organizations. For that reason, given the harm caused by the roadblocks, he warned that his sector could take action to clear the highways.

The leader said there is growing frustration among merchants due to the economic losses generated by the blockades, particularly in the cities of La Paz and El Alto.

Last night, a group of blockaders in the Río Seco area of El Alto forced merchants to close their stalls and shops under threats of looting. That act of vandalism caused material damage.

“They should be careful. Our sector is going to get tired, and we will come out in another way, but that is not the path. Enough with this kind of vandalism,” Gonzáles stated.

Gonzáles warned that if the blockades continue, market vendors could organize themselves to remove the protest points because of the damage they are causing to families who depend on daily sales in order to earn an income.

“We are not yet calling for that situation, but many comrades are pushing for roadblocks to be cleared because if the cities of La Paz and El Alto do not generate economic movement, people will not eat,” he said.

The national leader criticized those social organizations that were part of the MAS government and are now trying to destabilize the new government by demanding the resignation of President Rodrigo Paz.

“To the blockaders, to the professionals of road blocking, leave Bolivia in peace. You had 20 years in government. Wasn’t all that feeding at the trough enough for you? This new era no longer belongs to you. The time of the social organizations has reached its twilight, it is over. Today is the time of productive organizations, the ones that generate economic circulation,” he said.
