The trip by Vice President Edmand Lara and his wife, Deputy Diana Romero, to Mexico, as part of a delegation to attend the national team’s match, sparked strong backlash in the Legislative Assembly, where calls are growing to remove her mandate due to repeated absences.

“If she has more than eight absences, by regulation, she ceases to be a deputy. That is what the Chamber of Deputies’ rules establish,” said Claudia Bilbao of the Christian Democratic Party (PDC), referring to her colleague’s trip, although she did not specify whether the absences were justified.

Lara and Romero traveled on March 23 on a private flight to Monterrey, Mexico, along with a delegation of authorities and journalists. On Thursday the 26th, the Bolivian national team defeated Suriname, securing a place in a second playoff match for the next FIFA World Cup.

The trip by both authorities to an event unrelated to their constitutional duties triggered negative reactions. Not only did Bilbao question Romero; so did her fellow party member Catherine Pinto, who belongs to a divided faction of the PDC following the 2025 elections.

“Lara and his wife should stay there and resign; they would be doing all Bolivians a favor,” Pinto stated on March 27.

For Julieta Jiménez of the Unidad alliance, the trip was a “lack of respect,” and she warned that upon their return, a “surprise” awaits them.

“The request to remove Lara’s wife from her seat has already been filed before the plenary. It’s outrageous—she has ten absences,” Jiménez said, also announcing that the medical leave submitted by Romero should be investigated.

Coming to the legislator’s defense, Deputy Patricia Patiño stated on March 28 that her colleague was in her regional week and that her substitute had assumed duties in her absence.

Like Jiménez, Deputy Diego Brañez reported this Monday that a detailed report has been requested on Romero’s attendance at plenary sessions as well as at the commissions and committees to which she belongs.

“We want to assess how many absences there have been. The requests for leave are recurrent, and we do not know whether they were paid. We do not understand that regional week is meant to be spent abroad,” Brañez criticized.

The legislator explained that the formation of the Ethics Committee is expected this week in order to formalize the complaints.

According to the Chamber of Deputies’ regulations, one of the grounds for loss of mandate is the “unjustified abandonment of work for more than six consecutive days or eleven non-consecutive days in a year.”

So far, Deputy Romero has not commented. For his part, Vice President Lara justified the trip through a video, arguing the importance of supporting the national team.
