Navy divers work at nearly 5,000 meters above sea level to guarantee drinking water in Potosí

Specialized divers from the Bolivian Navy carried out underwater cleaning, inspection, and maintenance work in three reservoirs that supply drinking water to the city of Potosí. The operation took place at more than 4,960 meters above sea level, in one of the most demanding technical diving interventions in the country.

“This mission was carried out by highly specialized divers, who traveled to the city of Potosí to perform technical inspections, repairs, and preventive underwater maintenance, actions aimed at preserving the proper functioning of the water capture and storage systems,” reported the commander of the High-Altitude Diving Training Center (CIBA), Max Álvaro Villarroel Muñoz, according to institutional information.

CIBA personnel carried out dives of up to 15 meters deep in the Challviri, Lacachaka, and San Ildefonso reservoirs. The work ensured the operability and structural safety of these infrastructures, which are fundamental for the supply of drinking water to the population of Potosí.

The mission was carried out in coordination with Department III of Operations of the Bolivian Navy and the Autonomous Administration of Sanitary Works of Potosí (AAPOS), the entity responsible for managing these reservoirs, considered the main source supplying this vital liquid to the departmental capital.

The military institution highlighted that this type of operation demonstrates its specialized technical capability and strengthens interinstitutional cooperation with state entities. It emphasized that the interventions also contribute to water security, the protection of strategic infrastructure, and the well-being of the population, especially in regions of the high plateau where access to water represents an essential resource for development.
