The National Service of Protected Areas (Sernap) confirmed this Friday the discovery of a petrified fossil in Toro Toro National Park, located in the northern part of the department of Potosí, and immediately activated preventive conservation work in the area.

“The staff of Toro Toro National Park are carrying out preventive conservation tasks in the Cruz Llusta sector following the discovery of a petrified fossil,” the institution reported through its official social media accounts.

Due to the slope of the terrain, the technical team is implementing mitigation measures against water erosion, with the objective of safeguarding the integrity of the paleontological material and ensuring adequate conditions for its subsequent scientific study.

“These actions will allow the necessary research to be conducted to identify the species and strengthen the scientific and tourism heritage of the protected area,” Sernap added.

Toro Toro National Park is recognized for its archaeological and paleontological richness. Among its main attractions are the Garrapatal Canyon, the El Vergel waterfalls, the Umajalanta cavern, the turtle cemetery, and sites containing rock paintings. The new discovery reinforces the importance of this protected area as one of the country’s most significant scientific and tourist destinations.
