This year will lay the foundations for a new curricular design in the national education system, the Ministry of Education announced as it officially launched the 2026 school year throughout the country.

The government considers this a year of transition and planning, in which the changes that will govern Bolivian education starting in 2027 will be designed, along with new evaluation policies and updated pedagogical materials.

The opening ceremony was held yesterday in Copacabana, La Paz, with the presence of Head of State Rodrigo Paz Pereira and Minister of Education Beatriz García, who visited the “Coronel Félix Rosa Tejada” Educational Unit to inaugurate the new school year. Both highlighted the importance of restoring motivation and strengthening educational quality at all levels.

The 2026 academic year will be decisive in establishing the guidelines for a comprehensive curricular redesign, as well as in advancing the institutionalization of tests to measure educational quality and in drafting a new law for the sector.

“The Ministry will work with teachers, parents, and students to build a modern curriculum adapted to the country’s challenges,” an institutional statement emphasized.

Among the provisions for the new year, the ban on the use of cell phones in the classroom is maintained for both students and teachers, although computers and on-screen presentations are allowed as pedagogical tools. The Ministry also instructed departmental directorates to define specific measures in cases of natural disasters or health emergencies, guaranteeing educational continuity.

Regarding school tuition, the state portfolio froze the amounts during the enrollment period and announced the formation of a tripartite commission—made up of representatives of the State, schools, and parents—that will analyze a possible adjustment next April.

Deputy Minister of Regular Education Juan Carlos Pimentel called for facing the year with hope. “Let’s start classes with optimism, because the administrative measures we have taken will give educational units more possibilities to carry out their formative activities without pressure,” he said.

With these guidelines, the Ministry of Education seeks to make 2026 a starting point for a structural transformation of the Bolivian education system, aimed at improving learning and equity in the classroom.
