Informal market vendors focus on economic reactivation

Mercedes Quisbert, national secretary of the informal market vendors, stated that the sector will not mobilize against Supreme Decree 5503 and will prioritize economic reactivation due to the high sales season around Christmas and year-end. She also noted that agreements were reached in a meeting with the Government.

“We are not going to mobilize, we are not going to protest, because merchants—as informal market vendors and self-employed workers—are in a period when we want to recover economically through sales,” she said.

She explained that, because of the Christmas season, they are now selling holiday products that have been waiting for a year to be offered, and for that reason they cannot halt the sector’s economic activity.

She added that the sector has already met with the Government and reached agreements regarding the implementation of Supreme Decree 5503, during which they explained their main concerns. She emphasized that their goal is not to create unrest in the country through protests.

“We have listened, and they (the Government) have listened to all our concerns, and we hope the situation improves. The goal is not to convulse the country (…) we have to put on the jersey and shoulder the responsibility for the country—this is how we will move forward,” she concluded.
