Minister of Economy: “We are returning to a single, floating exchange rate, accessible to everyone”

The currency stabilizes in the market

The Minister of Economy states that the dollar remains stable and that in the coming weeks the Central Bank will begin rebuilding its reserves.

The Minister of Economy, José Gabriel Espinoza, assured that after the implementation of Supreme Decree 5503 the exchange rate has remained stable between 9 and 10 bolivianos, and that the country is moving toward a single, floating exchange-rate scheme.

“In the first hours after the decree, the exchange rate continues to be stable; it remains around nine, ten bolivianos,” the authority said, highlighting that the exchange-rate gap has narrowed rapidly in recent weeks.

Espinoza explained that in just one month the difference between the reference exchange rate and the official rate was reduced. “In just four weeks we have reduced this gap, which was at very high levels, and now it is just around nine, ten,” he stated.

The minister linked this development to the arrival of external financing of more than 680 million dollars, announced by the president. However, he emphasized that, unlike in the past, these resources will no longer be diluted in fuel subsidies. “Before, dollars arrived to pay the subsidy and ended up in the pockets of a few; now spending in dollars is beginning to fall significantly,” he said.

According to Espinoza, this reduction will make it possible to strengthen the Central Bank’s reserves. “That will mean the Central Bank can rebuild its reserves, and I would tell you that in a very short time, in the coming weeks, we will already have news on this,” he announced.

Finally, the minister underscored the direction of exchange-rate policy. “It is very clear where we are headed: we are returning to a single, floating exchange rate that is accessible to everyone,” he said, although he clarified that it is not possible to set an exact date. “Sometimes doctors have to make decisions and cannot preannounce them,” he concluded.
