President Paz announces that the Ministry of Justice is no more

Vidovic was dismissed on Wednesday due to a final court conviction. On Thursday morning, Jorge García was confirmed as the future minister, but hours later the government decided to eliminate the ministry altogether.

Hours after announcing the removal of Freddy Vidovic as Minister of Justice and naming Jorge García as his replacement, the government made another sharp turn: President Rodrigo Paz personally announced the elimination of this State portfolio, as he had promised during the electoral campaign.

“This decision is made so there is no further debate about a Ministry of Justice with political interference (…). There will be no more political persecution in Bolivia: the Ministry of Justice has died, so that State terrorism never returns,” Paz said Thursday afternoon during a press conference at Casa Grande del Pueblo.

In a surprising exchange with journalists, accompanied by Jorge García, the president revealed some details of the situation. He said that on Wednesday night he offered García the post of Minister of Justice—after having already decided to remove Vidovic—but García proposed another solution. “Yesterday I asked Dr. García to replace Vidovic and he told me: ‘close that ministry, Mr. President (…)’. I thank him for his sincerity and loyalty,” he stated.

In less than 24 hours, Bolivians witnessed a series of twists and turns regarding the Ministry of Justice and its unclear direction. On Wednesday it was confirmed that Vidovic—suggested to Paz by Vice President Edmand Lara—has had a final court sentence since 2015. On Thursday morning, during the ceremony restoring the headquarters of the APDHB, the president affirmed that Jorge García would be the new authority; the government even invited journalists to the swearing-in ceremony, only to cancel it later.

Explaining his decision, Paz emphasized that in just 12 days of government “we are sending clear signals of what we are going to do in the economy; creating institutional changes that were structured (by MAS governments) with a political vision and not one of service to the population.”

Regarding Vidovic’s appointment, Paz commented that during a cabinet meeting he asked him about his legal status—already questioned publicly—and Vidovic replied “that everything was in order.” Without issuing value judgments, the president said he trusted his word and argued that Vidovic has the right to defend himself, referring to “political persecution.”

To conclude, he stated: “now I am keeping my word to close the Ministry of Justice (…). The ministry of persecution is over, the ministry of injustice, which was a way of blackmailing society from political power.”
