Paz after revealing MAS “theft”

The President said the Government will begin gathering evidence and identifying those responsible to initiate proceedings, based on an administration of zero tolerance for corruption.

President Rodrigo Paz acknowledged on Sunday night that, rather than working on transformation, he is in the middle of an “autopsy” of a State he found dead.

“We are not transforming the State, we are basically performing an autopsy. The State is dead, because whoever steals more than 15 billion dollars —and the figure seems likely to grow— has killed a State that was supposed to serve Bolivians,” the Head of State said.

Paz revealed that in nearly 20 years of government by the Movement Toward Socialism (MAS) there was a “theft” from the State that, in the initial tally, already exceeds 15 billion dollars.

“What we are doing is more than reviving a roadblock-style State; it is an autopsy of this State to truly build a State that serves Bolivians,” he said in a press conference.

The President explained that during the first week of his administration, all ministers dedicated themselves to assessing the situation of each ministry and identified acts of corruption that caused multimillion-dollar losses.

Based on these initial indications, the Government will begin gathering evidence and identifying those responsible to initiate the corresponding proceedings, under an administration of zero tolerance for corruption.

“The first step is to resolve this. Today we held a cabinet meeting focused on the principle of no impunity in the fight against corruption,” the President said, adding that “those responsible for the theft left seven days ago,” referring to Luis Arce and his collaborators.
