The U.S. Deputy Secretary of State, Christopher Landau, has arrived in Bolivia to attend the inauguration ceremony of President-elect Rodrigo Paz, describing this trip as “the most emotional” he has made in his capacity as an official.

“I just landed in La Paz, Bolivia, and I’m on my way from the airport to the city. Of all these trips abroad I’ve made in this job, this is the most emotional one,” Landau wrote on his X account.

He added that the governments of the United States and Bolivia had been distant for 20 years and that he is moved to inaugurate “a new era of cooperation and partnership for the good of our two peoples.”

Relations between the two countries deteriorated during the governments of the Movement Toward Socialism (MAS). In 2008, then-President Evo Morales decided to expel the U.S. ambassador to Bolivia, Philip Goldberg, and break off relations with that country.

Landau will attend the inauguration ceremony of President-elect Rodrigo Paz as the representative of the U.S. Government.

When Morales decided to expel the U.S. ambassador to Bolivia, Philip Goldberg, in 2008, and sever diplomatic relations with that country, he did so without any consultation.

Vice Foreign Minister Elmer Catarina reported that five presidents from the region will arrive in the country for the inauguration.

The presidents who will attend are: Javier Milei of Argentina; Gabriel Boric of Chile; Daniel Noboa of Ecuador; Yamandú Orsi of Uruguay; and Santiago Peña of Paraguay.
