Governor Humberto Sánchez, during his visit to the municipality of Puerto Villarroel, enacted and delivered this Saturday two departmental laws, 1225 and 1221.

The highest authority of the department arrived in the municipality of Puerto Villarroel, accompanied by departmental assembly member Dámaris Orihuela and technicians, to officially deliver to the Civic Committee the two regulations approved by the Cochabamba Departmental Legislative Assembly (ALDC), which are now enacted.

“These are laws we have worked on in coordination with the Departmental Assembly, always contributing to the protection of these species and the cultural aspect. We are happy, pleased to deliver these two laws to the Civic Committee of Puerto Villarroel,” he stated.

The first law enacted is Departmental Law 1225 for the Protection and Conservation of the Bolivian Bufeo (Inia boliviensis), which consolidates its protection throughout the department of Cochabamba, considering it is a species in danger of extinction.

The second law enacted is Departmental Law 1221, which Declares of Departmental Cultural and Tourist Interest the October 12 Festival of the Capital of the 5th Section of the Municipality of Puerto Villarroel.

In that regard, departmental assembly member Dámaris Orihuela, who promoted the approval of these two laws, stated that they are of great importance for the tropic of Cochabamba, where more than 3,000 bufeos live in the Ichilo, Chimoré and other rivers, which are part of their natural habitat. She also highlighted the cultural and tourist importance of the October 12 festival in this municipality.

“The tropic has great tourism potential, and that is why this law is being enacted to protect the pink river dolphin and the festival of the Fifth Section, which has several activities that revalue our traditions and culture, being a tourist area,” she said.

In this regard, the president of the Puerto Villarroel Civic Committee, Lilian Gonzáles, highlighted the enactment of the two laws, which are of great benefit to their municipality, where the care of the pink bufeo and the aforementioned festival that gathers hundreds of tourists from inside and outside the country is promoted.

“The bufeo is one of the assets we have and we are now working on tourism activity. We are pleased with the Governor’s visit; we must protect species, not destroy them, so that they do not disappear from the planet,” she said.
