Located three hours from the city of Cochabamba, Tacopaya is a municipality emerging as a hub for community-based health tourism, with destinations such as Aguas Calientes, medicinal plant gardens, and archaeological sites.

Nine kilometers from the town center of Tacopaya is the community of Qhollpa Aguas Calientes, home to a tourist center with pools of ancient thermal waters.

The mayor of Tacopaya, Víctor Tola, stated that the infrastructure has been improved and they are making gradual progress.

“These waters are used for therapy, rheumatism, and other ailments, such as high blood pressure; they are healing waters.”

The general secretary of the Qhollpa Aguas Calientes community, Benito Palermo, affirmed that the community is working to establish the area as a tourist destination.

“I was born here, there are many medicinal properties; my grandfather used to say it’s medicine.”

Governor Humberto Sánchez visited the site to take part in a training session and assess the progress made in community-based tourism.

The official invited the public to visit the area so they can “appreciate and feel the warmth of the water and also enjoy these Andean lands of Tacopaya, breathe clean air, connect with nature, and recharge their energy.

The mayor reported that in recent years, many people have visited the area, both from within the country and abroad.

They are currently working on regulations for the tourist center.

MEDICINAL PLANTS Departmental Law No. 1122, enacted in September 2022, declares Tacopaya a producer of medicinal plants and a zone of tourist interest in the department of Cochabamba, for the promotion, conservation, transformation, and commercialization of these resources. There is also a municipal law in place.

Tacopaya produces a wide variety of medicinal plants such as rosemary, broom, muña, and other native and exotic herbs that help prevent and treat illnesses—such as yareta for kidney problems, kiswara for the prostate, altamira for high blood pressure, and muña for stomach inflammation.

The Department of Cultures and Tourism of the Cochabamba Governor’s Office is working to promote this tourist destination and to train community members. In terms of productive development, they provide technical assistance for the transformation of local products and adding value to them.

HOW TO GET THERE? Interested visitors can take public transportation on Wednesdays and weekends; the 23 de Enero line departs from Avenida 6 de Agosto.
