The recent mass death of sábalos (streaked prochilod, Prochilodus lineatus) along the banks of the Pilcomayo River has raised concern among the population and authorities of Villa Montes. However, the Biodiversity, Conservation and Wildlife Development Unit (Codefauna) of the Tarija Governorship ruled out water contamination as the cause and attributed the incident to the poor handling of fishing practices by some irresponsible fishermen.

“The problem is the poor handling of fishing techniques. Some people indiscriminately capture small fish, let them die, and then discard them in the river,” said Dimar Quispe, head of Codefauna in Villa Montes. He added that some responsible parties have already been identified and will be notified and could face sanctions.

In response to the large number of dead fish along the riverbanks, the Regional Government of Villa Montes deployed heavy machinery to clean up the area. A pit was dug to bury the remains in a sanitary manner to prevent risks to the environment and public health.

In addition to the dead fish, solid waste was also removed from the river. Quispe recommended that fishermen return fish that are not large enough for commercial sale back to the water, rather than letting them die and discarding them.

A commercial distributor located at the Ustárez Bridge stated that dead and decomposing sábalos are drifting downstream from the upper part of the river, which is also affecting the quality of the fish sold in markets.

Codefauna announced that it will carry out constant monitoring in both the upper and lower Pilcomayo. This year has seen a notable presence of fish, which has allowed for their sale at low prices, but authorities insist that fishing must be done responsibly to avoid these kinds of environmental consequences.
