This weekend, with around 100 athletes participating, the National Mountain Running Championship will kick off with the Snowrunning Chacaltaya, which will take place this Saturday in the Andes mountain range, formerly known as the highest ski slope in the world, and now covered in snow.

This will be the first race of the season, as the Coroico Vertical Kilometer, held in February, was part of the National Vertical Kilometer Championship, a new modality introduced in the country.

Both events are organized by Skyrunning Bolivia, which is endorsed by the Bolivian Ski and Mountaineering Federation (FEBSA).

The 2025 Mountain Running season will consist of five races. The other four are: Skyrunning Copacabana (April 27), Skyrunning Sajama (June 21), Skyline Tunupa (September 7), and Skymarathon Sorata (November 30).

The Event

“This year, our athletes are aiming to qualify for the 2026 World Championship, and our first race will start in the town of Milluni, District 13 of El Alto, with over 100 national and international runners. There will be participants from France, the Czech Republic, and Italy who have accepted this challenge,” said Paolo Choque, director of Skyrunning Bolivia.

There will be three distance categories: 26, 20, and 10 kilometers, featuring a more technical course over snow: “From the highest point of the course, you can admire Illimani, Huayna Potosí, the Altiplano, and Lake Titicaca.”

“The Autonomous Municipal Government of El Alto is promoting this race because it showcases the region’s tourist appeal, combining sports and tourism in District 13, in the community of Alto Milluni. They see this as a potential training ground for high-performance athletes and mountain sports,” Choque emphasized.
