Bolivia reaffirms its status as a birdwatching hotspot by ranking fifth in the October Big Day 2024, despite the severe environmental crisis affecting the country. With a total of 827 species recorded during the event held on October 12, Bolivia showcases its natural wealth and the dedication of its birdwatchers to preserving biodiversity.

This year, the October Big Day brought together 748,000 participants from 202 countries. A total of 7,849 species were documented in just 24 hours. Although the country experienced a slight decrease compared to the 842 species observed in 2023, its outstanding participation serves as a symbol of hope amid environmental challenges, including the loss of more than 9 million hectares due to forest fires.

World’s top 10

Cochabamba led the national birdwatching efforts with 402 species, followed by Santa Cruz and La Paz. The event not only celebrates avian diversity but also serves as a platform for citizen science, emphasizing the importance of bird conservation and the protection of their habitats.
