Katerine, a nine-year-old girl, emulating Genoveva Ríos, saved the national flag from the flagpole of her school before a forest fire engulfed the area.

This event took place at the Cañón de Fátima school, located about 40 minutes from the municipality of San Matías, the capital of Ángel Sandoval province, in the department of Santa Cruz.

According to the newspaper El Deber, around noon on Thursday, August 22, while the fire ravaged the surroundings of the school and local residents tried to save their belongings, Katerine ran towards the flagpoles, rescued the flag, and escaped from the area.

The police contingent, led by Major Ramiro Serrano García, arrived shortly after to contain the disaster.

The police saw Katerine running with the flag wrapped around her back, alongside her sister, through a smoke-filled path and under the threat of fire.

Genoveva Ríos, a Bolivian girl enshrined in the country’s history, saved the national flag during the Chilean occupation in 1879.

The forest fires mainly affect the department of Santa Cruz and are estimated to have destroyed over three million hectares of forests, grasslands, and even agricultural and urban areas, as in the case of this school.
