The picana [cattle prod], the turkey or the suckling pig are some of the foods that Bolivian families usually prepare on Christmas Eve to share with the family at midnight after the arrival of the Child Jesus and also, in some cases, it is eaten “reheated” on December 25 .

Picana, a traditional food inherited from colonial times, is the most popular on the Bolivian table on Christmas Eve. This dish, characterized by having a variety of meats, is an inheritance that goes from generation to generation, and that depending on each family has variations: some add raisins and wine to make it sweet and others add chili and beer to give it a spicy touch.

Baked suckling pig is another option that Bolivians opt for, which commonly comes accompanied by potato, sweet potato, dessert, corn and salad and a wine as an aperitif.

The stuffed turkey, although you can make it at home, in different supermarkets you can find it directly to put in the oven. This is another dish that families opt for.

The differences in what to eat at Christmas or how to prepare the food have their variations according to the customs of each family, which can occur depending on social class, ethnicity and tastes.

All of these dishes are also sold in restaurants where weeks before Christmas Eve they already have signs so that people can place their orders, others prefer to cook at home with the family recipe.
