Due to the imprisonment of Camacho, euro parliamentarians announce a session to request sanctions against the Government of Arce
Eurolegislators point out that a brake must be put on the “dictatorial attitude” assumed by the president of Bolivia, Luis Arce.
After the imprisonment of the governor of Santa Cruz, Luis Fernando Camacho, MEPs announced that they will request a session to discuss the case. They affirmed that they will request that the European Union (EU) issue sanctions for the Government of Luis Arce.
“I will promote a condemnatory resolution against the Government of Arce, which highlights its vocation for tyranny, will lead Bolivia to a total and absolute condemnation, by democratic governments (…). There must be a pronouncement from the European Parliament and sanctions by the European Commission, we must ask for severe sanctions against the Arce regime”, declared to Página Siete Digital the MEP of the Popular Party (PP) Leopoldo López.
López explained that on January 9 the activities will begin in the Eurochamber, he announced that on that date he will do the paperwork to request a session in which sanctions are requested. He explained that there must be a brake on the actions of “political persecution”, because the way in which former president Jeanine Añez was sentenced and now Camacho was imprisoned is irregular.
VOX Eurolegislator Hermann Tertsch pointed out that action should be taken against the Arce government, since he ignored the first resolution on Bolivia of the European Parliament, dated April 29, 2021, and continued with the “political persecution.”
“We are determined supporters of strong monitoring of what is happening in Bolivia and of beginning to take clear reprisals against the Arce dictatorship, as against all dictatorships (…). With the arrest of Jeanine Añez there were already reasons to request sanctions, now the arrest of Camacho makes it essential for the international community to react, “said Tertsch, also in contact with this medium.
The MEP explained that in the next few days a note will be sent to the European Parliament, in which they will also request that an observation mission be sent to Bolivia. He added that this type of abuse occurs because the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, and the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, did not take action when Añez was detained.
López and Tertsch agreed that there will be more reprisals against other Bolivian opposition leaders and that these actions are “reprimands” to silence dissident voices to the administration of the Movement Toward Socialism (MAS). In this sense, they expressed that a brake must be put on the attitude that Arce assumed.
Camacho was captured on December 28 in Santa Cruz, in a violent operation and transferred to La Paz, according to videos broadcast in the media and social networks.
In the early hours of this Friday, the justice determined his preventive detention for four months in the maximum security prison of Chonchocoro, a facility in which he already complies with the judicial decision, for the “coup d’état” case.

Eurolegisladores señalan que se debe poner un freno a la “actitud dictatorial” que asumió el presidente de Bolivia, Luis Arce.
Luego de la reclusión del gobernador de Santa Cruz, Luis Fernando Camacho, europarlamentarios anunciaron que solicitarán una sesión para tratar el caso. Afirmaron que pedirán que la Unión Europea (UE) emita sanciones para el Gobierno de Luis Arce.
“Promoveré una resolución condenatoria contra el Gobierno de Arce, que pone en evidencia su vocación por la tiranía, conducirá a Bolivia a una condena total y absoluta, por parte de los gobiernos democráticos (…). Debe haber un pronunciamiento del Europarlamento y sanciones por parte de la Comisión Europea, debemos pedir sanciones severas contra el régimen de Arce”, declaró a Página Siete Digital el europarlamentario del Partido Popular (PP) Leopoldo López.
López explicó que el 9 de enero comenzarán las actividades en la Eurocámara, adelantó que en esa fecha hará los trámites para solicitar una sesión en la cual se pida sanciones. Explicó que debe haber un freno a las acciones de “persecución política”, porque es irregular la manera en que fue condenada la expresidente Jeanine Añez y ahora se recluyó a Camacho.
El eurolegislador de VOX Hermann Tertsch señaló que se debe asumir acciones contra el Gobierno de Arce, puesto que hizo caso omiso a la primera resolución sobre Bolivia del Europarlamento, del 29 de abril de 2021, y continuó con la “persecución política”.
“Nosotros somos decididos partidarios de un fuerte seguimiento a lo que ocurre en Bolivia y de empezar a tomar represalias claras en contra la dictadura de Arce, como contra todas las dictaduras (…). Con el arresto de Jeanine Añez había ya motivos para pedir sanciones, ahora la detención de Camacho hace imprescindible que reaccione la comunidad internacional”, expresó Tertsch, también en contacto con este medio.
El europarlamentario detalló que en los próximos días se enviará una nota a la Eurocámara, en la que también solicitarán que se envíe a Bolivia una misión de observación. Agregó que este tipo de atropellos sucede porque el secretario general de la Organización de Estados Americanos (OEA), Luis Almagro, el alto representante de la UE para Asuntos Exteriores y Política de Seguridad, Josep Borrell, no tomaron medidas cuando Añez fue detenida.
López y Tertsch coincidieron en que habrá más represalias contra otros líderes de la oposición boliviana y que estas acciones son “escarmientos” para callar las voces disidentes a la administración del Movimiento Al Socialismo (MAS). En ese sentido expresaron que debe ponerse un freno a la actitud que asumió Arce.
Camacho fue capturado el 28 de diciembre en Santa Cruz, en un violento operativo y trasladado a La Paz, según muestran videos difundidos en medios y redes sociales.
En la madrugada de este viernes la justicia determinó su detención preventiva por cuatro meses en el penal de máxima seguridad de Chonchocoro, recinto en el cual ya cumple la decisión judicial, por el caso “golpe de Estado”.
