The US returns 22 pieces of pre-Columbian ceramics belonging to the cultural heritage of Bolivia
The Embassy of the United States in Bolivia has made the official return of 22 pieces of pre-Columbian ceramics to the National Museum of Archeology this Tuesday, May 10. The pieces were illegally extracted from Bolivia in the 1970s by a family of collectors, and thanks to an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the pieces were recovered and voluntarily handed over by the family.
Based on the Memorandum of Understanding for the Protection of Cultural Heritage signed by Bolivia and the United States in 2001, and the Bolivian legislation that protects cultural heritage, the ownership of the pieces and their return to Bolivia were determined.
After completing the formal process by which the United States government took legal possession of the artifacts, the artifacts were declared the property of Bolivia and arrangements were made for them to be transported back to their place of origin through the Bolivian State Department. USA.
The archaeologist and representative of the State Department’s Center for Cultural Heritage, Allison Davis, who came from the United States for the award ceremony, highlighted the importance of returning cultural heritage to the countries from which it was stolen: “It is important to conduct research to return the goods to their original community in the mark of the valorization of cultural heritage,” she said.

La Embajada de Estados Unidos en Bolivia ha hecho la devolución oficial de 22 piezas de cerámica precolombina al Museo Nacional de Arqueología este martes 10 de mayo. Las piezas fueron extraídas ilegalmente de Bolivia en los años 70 por una familia de coleccionistas, y gracias a una investigación realizada por la Oficina Federal de Investigaciones (FBI), las piezas fueron recuperadas y entregadas voluntariamente por la familia.
En base al Memorandum de Entendimiento para la Protección del Patrimonio Cultural firmado por Bolivia y Estados Unidos en 2001, y a la legislación boliviana que protege el patrimonio cultural, se determinó la propiedad de las piezas y su devolución a Bolivia.
Luego de completar el proceso formal por el cual el gobierno de Estados Unidos tomó posesión legal de los artefactos, dichos artefactos fueron declarados propiedad de Bolivia y se coordinaron arreglos para que fueran transportados de regreso a su lugar de origen a través del Departamento de Estado de Estados Unidos.
La arqueóloga y representante del Centro de Herencia Cultural del Departamento de Estado, Allison Davis, quien vino desde Estados Unidos para el acto de entrega, destacó la importancia de devolver el patrimonio cultural a los países de donde fueron robados: “Es importante realizar investigaciones para retornar los bienes a su comunidad original en la marca de la valorización del patrimonio cultural,” dijo.
