They declare the quirquincho Natural Heritage

The Andean quirquincho was declared a Natural Heritage of the Plurinational State of Bolivia, after National Law 1424 was enacted on April 13.

The norm was debated since last year in the Plurinational Legislative Assembly and was finally promulgated by President Luis Arce, according to a publication in the Official Gazette.

Through the declaration of heritage, it was established that, in coordination with the autonomous territorial entities, the “protection, conservation and defense” of the species and the habitat of that species will be prioritized through policies, programs and projects in the short, medium and long term.

The Andean quirquincho or Chaetophractus Nationi is also called the altiplano hairy armadillo that lives in the Andean region of Bolivia, Peru and Chile.

In the country, this animal is hunted for traditional purposes such as the shells that are used to make charangos and the bodies are turned into rattles for the traditional folk festivals of Ouro and La Paz.

In fact, it is also used as a lucky charm and for rituals in the west of the country.

Around 2,000 quirquinchos are hunted in the country each year, which caused it to be placed on the list of endangered species established in the Red Book of Vertebrate Wildlife of Bolivia.

Declaran el quirquincho Patrimonio Natural

El quirquincho andino fue declarado Patrimonio Natural del Estado Plurinacional de Bolivia, luego de que fuera promulgada la Ley nacional 1424 el pasado  13 de abril.

La norma fue debatida desde el pasado año en la Asamblea Legislativa Plurinacional y finalmente fue promulgada por el presidente Luis Arce, según una publicación de la Gaceta Oficial.

Mediante la declaratoria de patrimonio  se estableció que, en coordinación con las entidades territoriales autónomas, se priorizará la “protección, conservación y defensa” de la especie y el hábitat de esa especie a través de políticas, programas y proyectos a corto, mediano y largo plazo.

El quirquincho andino o Chaetophractus Nationi es también llamado el armadillo peludo del altiplano que habita en la región andina de Bolivia, Perú y Chile.

En el país, este animal es cazado con fines tradicionales como los caparazones que se utilizan para fabricar charangos y los cuerpos se convierten en matracas para las tradicionales fiestas folklóricas de Ouro y La Paz.

De hecho, también es utilizado como amuleto de la suerte y para rituales del occidente del país.

Alrededor de 2.000 quirquinchos son cazados en el país cada año, lo que hizo que se lo sitúe en la lista de especies en peligro de extinción establecido en el Libro Rojo de la Fauna Silvestre de Vertebrados de Bolivia.
