Get vaccinated, the only option
Bolivia is going through a third wave that, as doctors had warned, is more virulent than the first. There are two details that make the difference between one and the other: confinement and infections to young people. The first wave caught the country off guard. It was painfully confirmed that health had been neglected to such an extent that, in a few days, the few centers enabled to care for the infected collapsed.
The figures, shocking for a generation that was facing a pandemic for the first time, forced the only possible measure, the same one that other countries had taken: confinement.
The measure had the virtue of stopping the overwhelming advance of contagions, but it caused such great damage to the economy that the entire planet has not managed to recover. Quarantines are emergency measures that are imposed at times like the current one, when the escalation of infections is out of control, there is almost no room in hospitals and there are patients who die from lack of oxygen and medicines.
Although there are obvious differences between countries and continents, today there is a scientific and effective way to fight a disease: the vaccine.
The difference between Covid-19 and the other diseases that caused pandemics in the past is that, this time, vaccines were manufactured on time. Those that were developed and validated by the World Health Organization were made available to governments that bought them by the millions.
That determined, for example, that Europe has immunized the majority of its inhabitants and is now preparing to return to normality. In the case of Spain, it was announced that the restrictions will be lifted in the summer, which begins there on June 21.
On Tuesday, Israel lifted virtually all restrictions for Covid after a broad and swift nationwide vaccination campaign for those over 16 years of age. Only four new infections were registered that day.
So until something better is found, such as a cure, the best way to deal with the coronavirus is through the vaccine. That is why the global campaigns that have been unleashed against it, sustained by speculation, are lies that not only cause harm, but can also be considered criminal, because they promote the spread of Covid contagion, the increase in serious cases and the death of the infected.
It is to be expected that, on the one hand, the authorities launch information campaigns on the effectiveness of vaccines and, on the other, those who are convinced that they do not work, or are harmful, will be better informed and in serious sources, since the vaccine against Covid is the only real option to stop the pandemic, and overcome it.
Vacunarse, la única opción
Bolivia está atravesando una tercera ola que, como habían advertido los médicos, es más virulenta que la primera. Hay dos detalles que hacen la diferencia entre una y otra: el confinamiento y los contagios a personas jóvenes. La primera ola encontró desprevenido al país. Se confirmó dolorosamente que la salud había sido desatendida a tal punto que, en pocos días, colapsaron los escasos centros habilitados para asistir a los infectados.
Las cifras, estremecedoras para una generación que se enfrentaba por primera vez a una pandemia, obligaron a la única medida posible, la misma que habían asumido los demás países: el confinamiento.
La medida tuvo la virtud de frenar el avance avasallador de los contagios, pero causó un daño tan grande a la economía que el planeta entero no ha logrado recuperarse. Las cuarentenas son medidas de urgencia que se imponen en momentos como el actual, cuando la escalada de contagios está fuera de control, ya casi no hay sitio en los hospitales y hay enfermos que mueren por falta de oxígeno y medicinas.
Aunque existen obvias diferencias entre los países, y los continentes, hoy en día existe una manera científica y efectiva de combatir una enfermedad: la vacuna.
La diferencia entre la Covid-19 y las otras enfermedades que provocaron pandemias en el pasado es que, esta vez, se logró fabricar vacunas a tiempo. Las que fueron desarrolladas y validadas por la Organización Mundial de la Salud fueron puestas a disposición de los gobiernos que las compraron por millones.
Eso determinó, por ejemplo, que Europa haya inmunizado a la mayoría de sus habitantes y ahora se disponga a volver a la normalidad. En el caso de España, se anunció que las restricciones serán levantadas en el verano, que allá comienza el 21 de junio.
El martes, Israel levantó prácticamente todas las restricciones por Covid tras una amplia y rápida campaña de vacunación a nivel nacional para mayores de 16 años. Ese día se registraron sólo cuatro nuevos contagios.
Entonces, hasta que no se encuentre algo mejor, como una cura, la mejor manera de enfrentar el coronavirus es mediante la vacuna. Por eso es que las campañas mundiales que se han desatado contra ella, sostenidas por especulaciones, son mentiras que no solo causan daño, sino que pueden considerarse criminales, debido a que propician la propagación del contagio de Covid, el aumento de casos graves y la muerte de los infectados.
Es de esperar que, por un lado, las autoridades pongan marcha campañas de información sobre la efectividad de las vacunas y, por otro, quienes están convencidos de que no sirven, o son dañinas, se informen mejor y en fuentes serias, pues la vacuna contra la Covid es la única opción real de frenar la pandemia, y superarla.
