They announce that they will follow up the processes against the detainees.
The Ibero-American Jurists Association (Asjurib), through a statement, urged the Government of Bolivia to comply with the recommendations of the European Parliament with regard to respect for the independence of powers and the transparency of judicial processes. The organization also announced that it will monitor the processes initiated in the country to protect human rights and due process.
On April 29, the European Parliament expressed its concern “about the lack of independence and impartiality of the judicial system and the prevalence of structural problems.” They requested respect for the independence of powers.
Faced with this resolution, the statement from the association of lawyers urges the Bolivian Government to comply with human rights treaties. “The Asjurib urges the Bolivian Government to comply with the recommendations of the European Parliament, in order to avoid sanctions and/or restrictions that prevent the preservation of social peace, safeguarding the exercise of human rights, due process and the application of the law,” the statement indicates.
The institution also announces that it will monitor these processes. “It will carry out the corresponding follow-up to the processes initiated, in relation to said safeguards (to human rights) in the processing of detainees,” the statement said.
On Thursday, April 29, the European Parliament debated at its headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, the political situation in Bolivia, with emphasis on the arrest of former President Jeanine Añez and two of her former ministers, accused of the crimes of sedition, conspiracy and terrorism in the case of the alleged coup. They asked for the immediate release of ex-president Jeanine Añez and her apprehended ex-ministers.
The resolution debated for almost 30 minutes in the chamber of parliamentarians of the European Union, was approved by 396 out of a total of 691 votes, while another 267 euro parliamentarians rejected it and 28 abstained from casting their vote.
The ruling party (MAS) disliked that resolution. The president of the Chamber of Deputies, Freddy Mamani, said that he respects the resolution of the European Parliament. However, he said that Bolivia is a sovereign country that is governed by its own procedures and norms.
“We as Bolivians have our own Political Constitution of the State, regulations, our own bodies, on which we are always working. (…) We are not going to fight that (the European Parliament) drew (a resolution) against Bolivia, we respect their decisions,” he said.

La Asociación Juristas de Iberoamérica (Asjurib), mediante un comunicado, exhortó al Gobierno de Bolivia a cumplir las recomendaciones del Parlamento Europeo con respecto al respeto de la independencia de poderes y a la transparencia de los procesos judiciales. La organización anunció además que realizará el seguimiento a los procesos iniciados en el país en resguardo del derecho humano y el debido proceso.
El pasado 29 de abril, el Parlamento Europeo expresó su preocupación “por la falta de independencia e imparcialidad del sistema judicial y la prevalencia de problemas estructurales”. Solicitó el respeto a la independencia de poderes.
Ante esta resolución, el comunicado de la asociación de juristas insta al Gobierno boliviano a cumplir los tratados en materia de derechos humanos. “La Asjurib exhorta al Gobierno boliviano cumplir las recomendaciones del Parlamento Europeo, con el objeto de evitar sanciones y/o restricciones que impidan conservar la paz social, resguardando el ejercicio de los derechos humanos, el debido proceso y la aplicación de la ley”, indica el comunicado.
La institución anuncia además que realizará un seguimiento a estos procesos. “Realizará el seguimiento correspondiente a los procesamientos iniciados, en relación con dichos resguardos (a los derechos humanos) en el procesamiento de los detenidos”, indica el comunicado.
El jueves 29 de abril, el Europarlamento debatió en su sede en Bruselas, Bélgica, la situación política en Bolivia, con énfasis en la detención de la expresidenta Jeanine Añez y dos de sus exministros, acusados por los delitos de sedición, conspiración y terrorismo, en el caso del supuesto golpe de Estado. Pidió la liberación inmediata de la exmandataria Jeanine Añez y sus exministros aprehendidos.
La resolución debatida por casi 30 minutos en el hemiciclo de los parlamentarios de la Unión Europea fue aprobada por 396 de un total de 691 votos, mientras otros 267 europarlamentarios la rechazaron y 28 se abstuvieron de emitir su voto.
Al partido de Gobierno (MAS) le disgustó esa resolución. El presidente de la Cámara de Diputados, Freddy Mamani, dijo que respeta la resolución del Parlamento Europeo. Sin embargo, dijo que Bolivia es un país soberano que se rige bajo sus propios procedimientos y normas.
“Nosotros como bolivianos tenemos nuestro propia Constitución Política del Estado, normativas, nuestros propios órganos, sobre los cuales siempre se está trabajando. (…) No vamos a ir a pelearnos con que (el Parlamento Europeo) sacó (una resolución) contra Bolivia, nosotros respetamos sus decisiones”, dijo.
