Militias, that madness
The so-called Coordinator for the Defense of Democracy, which responds to the Movement Toward Socialism (MAS), was launched yesterday with the mad idea of changing the Constitution to create armed militias in the country destined to replace the Armed Forces.
If there were not a context of hardening of the MAS against its opponents, this proposal would not deserve a single line of comment, as it is contrary to the democratic values that the majority of Bolivians embrace. However, it must be remembered that the head of the MAS, Evo Morales, when he was a refugee in Argentina, said: “If I returned (to Bolivia), we must organize, like Venezuela, armed militias of the people.” So it wouldn’t be unusual for this idea to be a test balloon commissioned by the former president. In his logic, he considers that he has been betrayed by the Police and even by the Armed Forces, that is why he believes that he can replace them with armed civilians.
The idea is unhinged, but it is still dangerous. Bolivian democracy would not allow such an affront, but it is worth paying attention to this readiness.
Milicias, esa locura
La denominada Coordinadora de la Defensa de la Democracia, que responde al Movimiento Al Socialismo (MAS), se lanzó ayer con la desquiciada idea de cambiar la Constitución para crear milicias armadas en el país destinadas a reemplazar a las Fuerzas Armadas.
Si no existiera un contexto de endurecimiento del MAS en contra de sus oponentes, esta propuesta no merecería ni una línea de comentario, por ser contraria a los valores democráticos que abrazan la mayoría de los bolivianos. Sin embargo, hay que recordar que el jefe del MAS, Evo Morales, cuando estaba refugiado en Argentina, dijo: “Si volviera (a Bolivia), hay que organizar como Venezuela, milicias armadas del pueblo”. Entonces, no sería raro que esta idea sea un globo de ensayo encargado por el expresidente. En su lógica, él considera que ha sido traicionado por la Policía y hasta por las Fuerzas Armadas, por eso cree que puede reemplazarlas por civiles armados.
La idea es desquiciada, pero no por eso deja de ser peligrosa. La democracia boliviana no permitiría tal afrenta, pero no está demás estar atentos a este apresto.
