Dangerous lines
The government does not seem to have realized the risk involved in people standing in endless lines in the streets, day and night, to renew their driver’s license or identity card. You don’t have to be a scientist to realize that these lines may be spreading the coronavirus through crowding and long periods of time when people stay in the same place.
Last year, before the first wave of Covid-19, the government of Jeanine Añez extended the validity of the two documents until December 31. As that date has already passed, the consequence is the lines.
The regrettable thing is that the current government has not taken a timely decision to avoid this chaos, for example, extending the validity of these documents for a few more months or establishing a tiered plan of care by surnames, by numbers or by whatever seems best to them. The Segip announced that it will attend on Saturdays until 2:00 p.m., but it is clearly an insufficient measure.
What is the motivation for the current authorities not to make a decision in this regard? Hopefully it is not the collection of money that moves them.
Peligrosas filas
El Gobierno parece no haberse dado cuenta del riesgo que implica que la gente haga interminables filas en las calles, de día y de noche, para renovar su licencia de conducir o su carnet de identidad. No hay que ser científico para darse cuenta que esas filas pueden estar propagando el coronavirus por la aglomeración y los largos periodos en los que la gente permanece en el mismo lugar.
El año pasado, ante la primera ola de Covid-19, el gobierno de Jeanine Añez amplió la vigencia de los dos documentos hasta el 31 de diciembre. Como esa fecha ya pasó, la consecuencia son las filas.
Lo lamentable es que el Gobierno actual no haya tomado una decisión oportuna para evitar este caos, por ejemplo, ampliando por unos meses más la validez de esos documentos o estableciendo un plan escalonado de atención por apellidos, por números o por lo que mejor les parezca. El Segip anunció que atenderá los sábados hasta las 14:00, pero claramente es una medida insuficiente.
¿Cuál es la motivación para que las actuales autoridades no tomen una decisión al respecto? Esperemos que no sea la recaudación lo que les mueve.
