“Judicial crisis is a symptom of a weakened democracy”
“The crisis of justice is a symptom of a weakened democracy, which is responsible for the current political hegemony that fractures the independence of powers,” said the National Committee for the Defense of Democracy (Conade) in a press release.
The Committee assured that the Bolivian justice system is “prey” to power and corruption, a situation that even caused structural damage to the institutions and the rule of law.
Therefore, at present, “the dignity of people and the violation of human rights have even transformed us into victims of bad practices and bad officials, who have deprived many innocents of the precious value of freedom,” states the document.
This pronouncement arises in the middle of a great controversy unleashed in the country after the diffusion of an audio in which the condemnation of the doctor Jhiery Fernandez is admitted, being this one innocent.
Fernandez “is the victim of a serious situation of defenselessness and violation of fundamental rights, as a result of a criminal process plagued by vices of nullity,” the Committee said.
Pointed out that justice must be a fundamental instrument for the protection of the human rights of all citizens, since the opposite means confronting a clear abuse of power and authority, “which is tearing apart the institutionality of the State.”
On March 27 of this year, Fernandez was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the crime of raping the child Alexander, who died in 2014.
