Education and self pride

Bolivia is fortunate to have Andres Oppenheimer visit us, specially Bolivia. Last night at “No Mentiras” tv program, he described how countries like Singapore are developing fast, based on a well focused education for its people. Forty years ago Singapore was no reference to competitiveness, business entrepreneurship, Bolivia on the other hand with far more vast and important natural resources has accomplished very little. Another important remark from Andres is that countries as diverse as Finland, Singapore, China look forward than into the past. They focus on what they can do from now on, they intend and become competitive with what they have.

Instead of looking back to a “glorious” past. Our youth need to look to the future, with hope, not feeling less than no one in earth. Genoma itself grants us we are no better and certainly no worse than white, black, yellow, red or mestizo people around the world. On top of that, genoma also tells us that it doesn’t matter gender. So, Bolivians should look ahead with pride, it does not matter the color of our skin, nor being women in this “macho” environment. Bolivia should devote more resources to education, Chile is a perfect example. We need to trust in ourselves and have pride on what we can achieve. We need that our government provides clear rules of the game, a game that is played not at closed doors but with the rest of the world.

We were fortunate to have Oppenheimer came visit us, I just hope more people like him would visit us more often. There is no need to reinvent the wheel, just to replicate what worked elsewhere; if they could, why couldn’t we?…
