Harpy Eagle Chick Becomes the First Wild Individual to Be Banded for Scientific Study in Bolivia

This type of research had never been carried out in Bolivia until now. The harpy eagle has been declared an emblem of Santa Cruz’s skies and a Natural Heritage Symbol of the Department of Santa Cruz

Ariel is a five-month-old harpy eagle chick (Harpia harpyja), the first individual from a wild population of its species in Bolivia to be scientifically banded. The identification band will allow researchers to monitor the bird throughout its life and gather information about its survival, habitat use, dispersal, and reproduction, among other data. This information will make it possible to develop conservation strategies not only for this species but for many others as well, explained Gabriela Tavera, coordinator of the National Program for the Conservation of the Harpy Eagle in Bolivia at the Noel Kempff Mercado Museum of Natural History.

According to Tavera, data obtained through the observation and monitoring of this bird can help guide planning and decision-making, allowing policies and financial resources to be used more efficiently and effectively.

“That is why such large and charismatic species are selected for study, such as jaguars, river dolphins, and spectacled bears, each representing its particular habitat. The harpy eagle is the representative species of the forest canopy, which is also extremely important—the aerial layer of the ecosystem,” she explained.

Everything began in September of last year when a harpy eagle nest was identified in Santa Rosa del Sara. In October, a multidisciplinary team—including biologists, wildlife veterinarians, photographers, and videographers specializing in wildlife—began monitoring the nest.

“We were able to monitor the female after she laid the egg. Then came the incubation process and later the hatching of this chick. All of these stages are highly critical in wildlife because they are part of the reproductive period,” Tavera said.

The entire observation process followed strict research protocols, took the bird’s biology into account, and was carried out with minimal intervention and the appropriate safeguards. This included reviewing experiences from other countries, logistical planning, training, and expert guidance. In this case, the consulting specialist was Dr. Alexander Blanco of Venezuela, who leads that country’s conservation program and has more than 30 years of experience working with this species.

Once Ariel was old enough to be marked, the procedure was carried out by specialists under strict animal welfare protocols. After being banded, Ariel was safely returned to the nest. Tavera explained that it takes between one and a half and two years before a harpy eagle leaves the nest.

“All the data we are obtaining through the program are the first systematically collected data on the species in Bolivia. This is something entirely new,” she said regarding the information that can be obtained through banding, a standardized method in bird research.

“Population studies always take a long time—they take years—but they have to start somewhere, and for us this is a milestone,” said Tavera, who also acknowledged the commitment and professionalism of the team conducting the study on a voluntary and self-funded basis.

The harpy eagle is the largest eagle in the Americas. Tavera noted that it has virtually no natural predators above it in the food chain, making it an apex predator. She explained that the species helps regulate other wildlife populations from the forest canopy, the upper layer of tropical forests.

“They play an ecological role in tropical and Amazonian forests that cannot be replaced by any other species. Their hunting ability has made them the most powerful bird in the world. Their carrying capacity exceeds their own body weight,” the biologist explained.
