Bolivian Astrophotographer Earns NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day Honor
A photograph by Bolivian astrophotographer Gonzalo Laserna Vargas has been selected by NASA as its Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD), a prestigious distinction that showcases exceptional images of the universe captured by photographers and astronomers from around the world.
The image, titled “Barnard’s Loop Above Twin Volcanoes,” features the vast arc of Barnard’s Loop stretching across the night sky above the snow-covered Parinacota and Pomerape volcanoes in the Bolivian Altiplano. The photograph also captures the Orion Nebula and other prominent celestial objects visible in the region’s exceptionally clear skies.
According to NASA, the image was created from a series of exposures taken from the same location in Bolivia in April 2026. The timing and positioning were carefully planned to align the reddish arc of Barnard’s Loop with the two volcanic peaks, producing a striking visual composition.
NASA noted that while Parinacota and Pomerape, which straddle the Bolivia–Chile border, are not known to share any underground connection, the photograph creates the illusion that the giant celestial structure links the two summits.
Laserna described the recognition as the culmination of years of dedication to astrophotography and said the selection represents an important achievement not only for his work but also for Bolivia’s presence in the international astronomy community.

La imagen muestra el Bucle de Barnard sobre los volcanes Parinacota y Pomerape, junto a la Nebulosa de Orión, en el altiplano boliviano.
La fotografía del astrofotógrafo boliviano Gonzalo Laserna Vargas fue seleccionada por la NASA como la Imagen Astronómica del Día (APOD, por sus siglas en inglés), un reconocimiento que destaca capturas del universo realizadas por especialistas de diferentes países.
La imagen, titulada “Bucle de Barnard sobre volcanes gemelos”, muestra el fenómeno astronómico Bucle de Barnard sobre los volcanes nevados Parinacota y Pomerape, en el altiplano boliviano, además de la Nebulosa de Orión y otros elementos visibles del cielo nocturno.
La NASA explicó que la fotografía fue realizada desde Bolivia en abril de 2026 mediante una serie de exposiciones tomadas desde un mismo lugar y en un momento cuidadosamente planificado, lo que permitió captar la alineación visual del arco rojizo del Bucle de Barnard con ambos volcanes.
De acuerdo con la descripción difundida por la agencia espacial, los volcanes Parinacota y Pomerape, ubicados en la frontera entre Bolivia y Chile, no tienen una conexión subterránea conocida, pero la composición fotográfica logró generar la apariencia de que el fenómeno astronómico une ambas cumbres.
Laserna destacó que la designación de su fotografía como Imagen Astronómica del Día representa un reconocimiento al trabajo desarrollado durante varios años en la astrofotografía y un logro para Bolivia en el ámbito internacional.
La NASA publica diariamente la Imagen Astronómica del Día, acompañada de una explicación elaborada por astrónomos profesionales, con el objetivo de difundir fotografías y descubrimientos relacionados con el universo.
