The presidents of the civic committees from the country’s nine departments, meeting in Santa Cruz de la Sierra this Thursday, agreed to demand the immediate execution of the arrest warrant against former president Evo Morales, as part of the conclusions reached during a gathering led by the Comité Cívico pro Santa Cruz.

The president of the institution, Stello Cochamanidis, urged state authorities to fulfill their constitutional duties and enforce the order issued by the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

“We demand that the Prosecutor’s Office, the Police, and the Ministry of Government strictly comply with their constitutional duty through the immediate execution of the arrest warrant against Evo Morales Ayma,” he stated during a press conference.

The civic leader argued that the lack of action in this case reflects a climate of impunity that, in his view, directly affects the rule of law, given that those chiefly responsible for the unrest and acts of violence have not been punished.

After 28 days of protests across the country, the civic sector also proposed a series of measures to address the crisis, including the implementation of a sector-based state of emergency by the Executive Branch, the approval of an anti-blockade law in the Legislative Assembly, and the establishment of economic compensation mechanisms for the damages caused by the road blockades.

They also reiterated that the arrest warrant against Morales must be enforced. He is facing criminal proceedings initiated by the Public Prosecutor’s Office for alleged crimes of aggravated human trafficking and statutory rape.
