IN DENOMINATIONS OF 10, 20, AND 50

Series B banknotes will be valid starting Monday, except those from the accident, announces the BCB

The Central Bank of Bolivia (BCB) reported that starting Monday, March 2, Bs10, Bs20, and Bs50 banknotes from Series B will once again be valid, except for those identified as part of the batch that was on the aircraft involved in the accident in El Alto.

BCB President David Espinoza explained that it had been decided to temporarily disable these Series B denominations as a preventive measure, but the numbering of the banknotes from the accident has now been identified and represents a “small quantity” compared to the rest.

“Consequently, the 10, 20, and 50 boliviano banknotes of Series B will have full legal validity and may circulate normally throughout the national territory. There is one exception. Only the 10, 20, and 50 boliviano Series B banknotes that were part of the batch transported on the crashed aircraft will be invalidated, as we also announced last night,” he summarized.

He announced that the serial numbers of the accident-related banknotes will be made public and that an app will be developed to help identify them.

According to the BCB president, the purpose of publishing the numbering is for citizens to avoid receiving invalid banknotes that were part of the accident.

“We once again call on the public to cooperate with us in normalizing the payment system, to carry out transactions using 10, 20, and 50 boliviano Series B banknotes without any difficulty, because all banknotes dispensed by banks through tellers and ATMs are absolutely valid. There will be an app available so people can identify any banknote from the accident,” he stated.

He clarified that if the stolen banknotes reach banks, they will be confiscated and sent to the BCB.

He explained that the shipment carried 17 million banknotes, and it is estimated that about 30% were stolen.
