Wikipedia, the world’s most consulted digital encyclopedia, has updated one of the most debated historical facts about Juana Azurduy de Padilla: her birthplace.

The platform now states that the heroine was born in the city of La Plata, today Sucre, on January 26, 1780, and not in Toroca, Potosí, as was previously claimed. A detail that reshapes historical memory, precisely on a day like today.

The correction is not minor. It also уточes her full identity: Juana Azurduy Llanos, and no longer Bermúdez, as it had appeared before. In addition, it confirms that she was the daughter of Isidoro Azurduy and Juliana Llanos.

The updated article notes that she was baptized on April 26, 1780, in the church of San Pedro de Montalbán in Tarabuco. Her childhood unfolded in Chuquisaca, in the countryside, with a freedom uncommon for girls of her time.

The change is based on the research of historian Norberto Benjamín Torres, who carried out an exhaustive study of the life of the guerrilla leader who led decisive battles for the independence of Upper Peru, especially in the region of La Laguna, today Padilla.

Torres maintains that Juana Azurduy was not born on July 12, a date that for years was commemorated incorrectly. His conclusions are supported by historians such as Hugo Canedo and Fernando Suárez.

In an interview with ERBOL, the researcher regretted that the authorities had not assumed the correction of this historical distortion with the same speed, despite the solid documentary evidence presented.

As he explained, baptism and marriage certificates are key. The ecclesiastical document confirms that Juana was baptized in a community ceremony along with other children and that her godmother was Rosa Sarate, owner of the Cororo estate.

“The date we know with precision is the baptism. The certificate states that she was two months old, which makes it possible to rule out the month of July,” Torres explained.

Wikipedia, a free, open, and collaborative encyclopedia, bases its content on verifiable sources and specialized studies. Thousands of editors around the world review and update its articles, turning it into a global reference for historical knowledge.

This correction does not only adjust a biographical detail. It also restores to Sucre a central place in the history of one of the most emblematic figures of Latin American independence.
